RLC Rebels recognized at Awards Night

Red Lake County boys’ basketball Awards Night was Monday, March 28 in Red Lake Falls. There were many players who received varsity letters and pins. The seniors letter winners included Wyatt Waldal, Austin May, Austin Waliser, Drake Engelstad, Will Duden, Ethan Johnson, Marcus Christensen, and Devin Lambert. There were three juniors receiving letters: Talon Porter, Brandon Lee and Dylan Olsen. Sophomore letter winners were Ethan Vettleson, Matt Vettleson, and Jordan Johnson. There was one freshman, Justin Nemec who received a letter.
Other participants were Nick Plante, and Makay Berns for the juniors, John Renner for the sophomores, and Ben Cardinal, Austin Jensen, Connor Lambert, Hunter Pierson, Dawson Rystad, Adrien Verbout, and Brandon Wiskow for the freshmen.
Medals were presented to the team captains Will Duden, Drake Engelstad, and Austin Waliser. Perfect attendance medals went to Marcus Christensen, Will Duden, Drake Engelstad, Dylan Olson, John Renner, Ethan Vettleson, and Justin Nemec.
For team awards, the Defensive Player of the Year was Austin May. Most Improved Player was given to Devin Lambert. Best Teammate Award went to Austin Waliser. Most Dedicated/Hardest Worker Awards were given to Drake Engelstad. Buckets and Books Awards were given to Austin Waliser and Will Duden.
Named Academic All-State was Austin Waliser, the only one from Section 8 with 3.5 GPA. Will Duden was selected Honorable Mention Academic All-State. Drake Engelstad earned Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Honorable Mention selection. Will Duden received KRJM Radio Student of the Week award.
Seniors who joined the 1000 Point Club by scoring over 1000 career points were Drake Engelstad with 1778 and Austin Waliser with 1098.
The team played at the Northland Community and Technical College Tournament taking third place. Drake Engelstad was named Northland All-Tournament team.
RLC Rebels were the varsity conference champions. Drake Engelstad, Will Duden, Austin Waliser were named All Conference and Honorable Mention was given to Austin May.
The Rebels set several new team records including the most wins in a season with 19, and least turnovers in a game with only one team turnover in a game against Stephen-Argyle which was a state record and possibly a national record!
Drake Engelstad was recognized for several team records. He had the most points in a game with 41 against Fisher-Climax, the most points in a season with 653 points, most free throws made in a game with 16, and most double-doubles in a season with 12.
Coaches Randy Huie, Kory Baril, Kevin Philion each received a gift certificate. Randy Huie was named Minnesota Assistant Coach of the Year.
Blankets were given to the senior basketball players. Also Phil Fore was given a blanket with his name and Rebels in recognition of his work for the Rebels basketball program. Two fans who attend many sporting events Don and Alma Stenberg were presented a “Super Fans” blanket.
