Sherman Bernard Plante was born May 31, 1936 in Oklee, MN the son of Thomas and Lucille (Perrault) Plante. He was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith. He grew up and attended school through the 8th grade in Brooks, MN. At the age of 13 he started working as a farm hand to help provide for his mother and siblings. He worked at the Brooks Cheese Factory then the Thief River Falls Cheese Factory.
On August 22, 1959 Sherman was united in marriage to Jean Gauthier at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. The couple made their home in Crookston, MN for a short time before settling in Red Lake Falls, MN. They lived in the same house for almost 60 years where they raised their four children – John, Laurie, Danny and Stacy. Over the years they entertained countless family members, friends, and neighbors in their home. When their children were young, they enjoyed camping and traveling to visit relatives.
He was a truck driver for Central Bi-Products for 33 years, tended bar for 10 years at night and worked at Arctic Cat for 8 ½ years. Together with Jean he also cleaned several businesses in Red Lake Falls including the clinic, bank, highway department and funeral home. He retired at 63 years old.
After retirement, mowing his lawn, raking leaves or moving snow, painting his house, his daily trip to the mailbox and taking long walks around Red Lake Falls became his past times. Having a well-kept house and yard was always important to Sherman. He stayed very active until his health no longer allowed it. For the last several years of his life, his health forced him to lead a more relaxed life that he much deserved.
He enjoyed visiting, telling stories from his past and looked forward to an evening or afternoon of playing cards with Jean, his family or friends. Sherman was a selfless, loving, kind and caring man with a big smile and big heart. He found little ways to make his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren feel loved when he was with them. Sherman was always willing to help a family member, friend, neighbor, or stranger. He was a friend to all he met and always found the best in everyone.
