Services for Robert (Bob) Payne

Robert “Bob” Payne passed away on March 18, 2017 at the age of 93 at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in Bemidji.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cease Funeral Home in Bagley, MN with Reverend Robert Kirchman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Final resting place will be at Norway Lake Cemetery in Leonard, MN. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with the arrangements.

He was born on April 13, 1923 to parents Lucy and David Payne, Sr. of Leonard, MN. He attended grade school in Leonard and graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1942. He enrolled at Mayville State College in 1942 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific area and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Lillian TeHennepe of Leonard and they had two children. He was employed by the Leonard Garage and the Leonard Creamery until 1956. He and his family then moved to Silver Bay, MN where they lived for 39 years and were members of Sychar Lutheran Church. In Silver Bay, Bob and his wife enjoyed the outdoor recreation of camping, fishing, and snowmobiling. He attended all the games and sports activities that both his children were involved in. Bob was employed at Reserve Mining Company and retired in 1984.

In 1995, he and his wife moved back to Leonard where they lived until 2015 when they moved to Bemidji. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Leonard and a member of the American Legion for over 70 years and also a member of the VFW. In his later years, his hobbies included reading, gardening, repairing, remodeling, and being a miscellaneous handyman. He especially looked forward to the visits and phone calls from his children and grandchildren. They will miss their “Grandpa Bob” and “Old Grampy”.

Robert is survived by his wife; Lillian of Bemidji; a son, Daniel ( Patricia) Payne of North Branch, MN; a daughter, Linda (Harlan) McCorkell of Mankato, MN; four grandchildren, Cynthia (Lance) Ellis of Spencer, IA, Cheryl (Jason) Lagergren of Duluth, MN, Chad (Susan) McCorkell of Yankton, SD, and Christine Curtis of Two Harbors, MN; and twelve great grandchildren, Amber, Autumn, and Kenser Ellis; Christopher Stafne, Vienna, Annika, and Sophia Lagergren, Lexie, Megan, and Jace McCorkell, and Kyler and Morganne Curtis. Also surviving is one godson, Roger Isackson,  and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; six sisters; one goddaughter, Jill Sanner; and several nieces and nephews.
