Services for Harriet Holm

Harriet Marie (Bagaason) Holm, age 89 of Bagley, MN passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji, MN.  Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 2 p.m.; with visitation 1 hour prior to the service at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook, MN.

Harriet was born October 21, 1929 in rural Clearbrook to parents Bennett and Thea Bagaason.  Harriet was baptized and confirmed at the Seljord Lutheran Church and was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook, MN.

Harriet attended grade school in the Leon Country School, and graduated from Clearbrook Public School in 1947. She went on to one year of normal school in East Grand Forks and through the years attended summer school sessions, night school, correspondence courses from the U of M and received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Bemidji State University. Her teaching career began in 1948 in the Windsor Country School and in the following years taught in Pine Dale in rural Clearbrook, Hillside in rural Bagley, Happy Hollow in rural Clearbrook, Riverview in rural Shevlin, Leonard and Minerva in rural Bagley. Harriet in an article upon her retirement in 1984 for the Leader Record Newspaper stated there was no plumbing in most of the rural schools and she did sweeping and general cleanup but most of the schools had janitors so she says she “didn’t have things too rough.”  “I was really happy having a chance to teach in the country schools, having gone to rural schools myself, I liked the experience of doing it all myself with no aids. It was good for me.” Rural schools were consolidating, and the children were going to school in town so in 1962 she began teaching second grade for thirteen years and first grade for nine years, for a total of 30 years in the classrooms, said she enjoyed teaching all those years and wishes she would have kept a journal of all the interesting and cute things the children said and did over the years. The memories of the children and of the career are sweet. And “I’ve had such nice co-workers. They made my job so much more pleasant and interesting.” On her last day of teaching she dressed in a gown and sang - “so long, it’s been good to know you.” Fun farewell!

She married Russell Holm on November 18, 1948 in Bagley, MN.  Russell and Harriet had two children Bradley and Karen.
They made their home in Eddy Township on the farm for 68 years. They enjoyed traveling south in the winter in their RV after retirement for several years.  Russell & Harriet moved to Cornerstone Residence Assisted Living, Bagley in November 2016 where she continued to reside.

Harriet helped with the farming chores as well as the bookkeeping for their construction business. Harriet was very active in her church and the Clearwater County Food Shelf for many years. Harriet had a good sense of humor, quick wit and maybe even a little Norwegian stubborn streak (now & then) but always a ready smile for everyone.  Russell always said, “I have a wonderful Wife” and she was truly a special Mom, Grandmother and Lady!  She enjoyed visiting with her friends and family and watching Twins baseball.  She had a better memory than most of us, which she proved many times over the years.

Harriet is survived by her son Bradley Holm of Clearbrook, her daughter Karen (Jerry) Stoker of Clearbrook.  Grandson Nicholas (Ninky) Holm, of Ocean Side California, great grandchildren Aisha and Asher. Grandson Kevin Holm of Leicester North Carolina.  Sister Carol (Robert) Loe of Owatonna, MN.  Several nieces and nephews.  Sister-in-law Jean Price of Palm Springs, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Russell; sisters Cora and Ruth; brothers Philip, Kenneth, Lowell, Orin. and Donald.
Her ashes will be buried next to Russell in the Seljord Cemetery, Clearbrook, MN.

The memory of Harriet will live on in our hearts.
