He went on to enlist in the Navy in 1954 and became a combat air crewman on the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier during the Korean War. He returned home to Bedford, Ohio two years later, and swept the love of his life, Eileen Colsom, off her feet at a VFW New Years Eve party on the last night of 1957. They were united in marriage on May 9, 1959 at the First Baptist Church in Bedford, Ohio. They continued their life together there, with George operating his own meat market and store. But in 1966, he went on an adventure to Alaska and had his heart stolen by the state. He eventually convinced his family to move there in 1973, where they resided for the next 24 years. He and Eileen moved to Clearbrook, MN in 1996, and then to Arizona in 2004, before coming back to Clearwater County in 2010.
George was a was a member of the Pinewood, MN Legion, and was a life-long member of the VFW post 182 in Bedford, Ohio, holding the position of commander for some time. He was a proud veteran and loved telling the stories of his time in the service. George was a man of adventure, he even crashed a gyrocopter and did some undercover police work for a time. He loved flying, at one point owning his own plane, and prospecting, owning his own gold mine for a period. He enjoyed hunting, swimming, carving, cooking, and camping. He became a passionate man of prayer and read the bible often. He loved his grandchildren and spending time with his family. He will be very missed.
