Services for Bernard Kaster

Bernard Kaster, age 78, of Erskine, MN, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 11th, at his home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 16th at 3:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with Rev. Michael Sletto officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, July 15th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine. Bernard Gregory Kaster, Jr. was born July 28, 1937 in LaGarde Township near Mahnomen, Minnesota, to parents Bernard Albert Kaster and Martha (Tschida) Kaster. He attended Ahmann Country School near Mahnomen. Later, he attended trade school with his brother Don in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Bernie was united in marriage to Janice Sannes on October 7, 1961 in Circle Pines, Minnesota. After marrying, they lived for a short time in the Twin Cities and in Hallock, Minnesota before moving to Erskine, Minnesota. Bernie continued living at Erskine after Janice’s death in 1998.
A carpenter for many years, Bernie was a member of Carpenters Union #1644 for over fifty years. He worked residential construction in the Twin Cities from the late 1960s until 1994. From 1994 until recently, Bernie worked with his son Paul in the construction business in Erskine and surrounding communities. He enjoyed hunting, attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events, Polka music, collecting antique tractors, and reading.
On Monday, July 11, 2016, Bernie passed away unexpectedly at his home near Erskine at the age of 78.
He is survived by his mother, Martha Kaster of Mahnomen; two sons, Gregory (Diane) Kaster of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Paul (Lynette) Kaster of McIntosh, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Brandon (Camille) Kaster of Fargo, North Dakota, Justin Kaster and his special friend, Ashley of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Olivia Kaster, Shelby Kaster, and Travis Kaster of McIntosh; five brothers, Don (Nancy) Kaster of Bloomington, Minnesota, Ray Kaster of Fertile, Minnesota, Gene Kaster of Mahnomen, Richard (Greta) Kaster of Buckeye, Arizona, and Mike Kaster of Mahnomen; one sister, Audrey (John) Frank of Shorewood, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Keith (Joanne) Sannes of Erskine; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Janice; one brother, Kenneth Kaster; sister, Dorine Leslie and infant sister, Marilyn Kaster; one brother-in-law, Bob Leslie; and one sister-in-law, Eileen Kaster.
