Stay safe while you travel
Staying safe while traveling internationally involves preparation, awareness, and good decision-making. Here are some practical tips.
6 months before you travel: Call a health care clinic or travel clinic for an appointment to make a plan to complete needed vaccines. Some vaccines need to be given several weeks to months before travel. You will also want to give your body time to develop immunity after getting vaccinated. 3 months before you travel: Make sure you have necessary medications that will last your whole trip and medical documentation, if needed. Figure out a “just in case” plan for if you need health care while traveling. Pack an emergency first aid kit and emergency contact information. 4-6 weeks before you travel. Ask your insurance if they will cover the medications needed for your trip. Always double-check that you will have all the necessary health documentation required for travel to your destination. Refer to CDC Traveler’s Health: Pack Smart (wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/pack-smart) for a suggested packing list. Visit Guidance for Travelers: International Travel & Infectious Disease (www.health.mn.gov/travel) to learn more about staying healthy before, during, and after international travel. If you return and do not feel well, visit a health care provider and let them know that you recently traveled internationally.
Before you leave: Research your destination, including local laws, customs, weather, and any travel advisories. Share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member. Make copies of important documents such as your passport, driver's license, travel insurance, and itinerary. Keep digital copies stored securely. Purchase travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. Check that routine vaccinations are up to date and learn about any health precautions for your destination.
Protect your money and valuables: Carry only the cash and cards you need for the day. Use a money belt, hidden pouch, or secure bag when carrying valuables. Keep your passport and other important documents in a secure location. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Be alert in crowded areas and trust your instincts. Avoid walking alone at night. Transportation Safety: Use licensed taxis, reputable rideshare services, or trusted public transportation. Verify the driver's identity and vehicle information before entering a rideshare. Wear seat belts whenever available. Hotel and Accommodation Safety: Lock doors and windows when inside your room and when leaving and use the hotel safe. Know the location of emergency exits. Health and Personal Safety: Stay hydrated and get adequate rest. Follow food and water safety recommendations. Carry medications in their original containers. Digital Safety: Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi. Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. Do not share your real-time location on social media. In an Emergency: Know the local emergency phone numbers and contact information for your country’s embassy or consulate. Have a list of emergency contacts readily available. (MDH, CDC)
