Clearbrook-Gonvick School Board May 18
The Clearbrook-Gonvick School Board met in regular session on Monday, May 18. They had four board members which made a quorum. Missing were Wittenberg, Petterson and Solee.
Mr. Bettin gave his Spotlight on Education. Many events during the last month of school. The third-grade trip to Itasca Park. The Sixth Grade trip to the Cities with 524 miles and visits to Target Field, Ft. Snelling Science Museum and State Capitol among others. The shop had 8 calls to make raised garden. They worked on the ticket booth for football games, the roof on the garage and other projects. The Envirothon Team took 2nd place in competition. 23 seniors went on the class trip. All 30 seniors will have signed diplomas. Scholarships were presented with a total of $98,250 and two seniors with scholarships over four years totaling $140,00 and $180,000. Those two were Sarah Imle and Joely Hinrichs Olson.
They approved the previous minutes from April 20 and April 29 meetings.
Principal Report
Mr. Tharaldson says students have registered for their classes next year. New students will have an opportunity to register in the fall at the back-to-school registration event. New Families with students who would be interested in attending Clearbrook-Gonvick next year are encouraged to contact the office to start the registration process this spring before summer break for planning purposes. Graduation was set for Saturday, May 23 at 2:00 p.m. Kindergarten graduation May 20 at 1:00 p.m. The last day of school with dismissal at 12:30 pm is May 22.
They are continuing to screen students through the READ Act and will use CAPTI as the dyslexia screener next school year. They are working to get the literacy plan updated and submitted to MDE. Most paraprofessionals have completed the requirement for their training, and some will need to be trained next year as they did not get it done this year.
The consent calendar was approved with non-payroll checks at $599,101.76 and pay roll at $268,500.51 for a total of $867.602.27. Superintendent Report
Mr. Grow included open positions with part-time cook, and a couple of coaches. They will begin negotiations with support staff with Kayla, Ryan and Vern. The literacy plan will have training through NW Coop in June. The legislature adjourned with not much for education. The compensatory fund is at 10 million and will be divided out among 400 school districts. Clearbrook-Gonvick will be hit with $91,000. Voters will be voting in November on the constitutional amendment to change how the $2.3 billion Permanent School Funds are managed. The proposal aims to shift distribution from solely interest/dividends to a 4.5% payout based on a three-year rolling average to increase revenue for schools. No money was allocated for summer hourly unemployment workers as well from the state session. The new truck should be delivered this summer. Cost for that was $51,883.00. That will be in next year’s budget along with a lawn mower and bus purchase.
Jen Chapman from Ehlers went over the General Obligation bonds that are ready to go for the roof replacement and main entrance windows. Tremco which provides design and construction services, will be the General Contractor. Chapmans estimate will be for 3.52 million when they release the bond. This was under the amount of four million that the school board set for the project. The state mandates that the cost would be 105% over the cost of the project.
The board awarded the roof replacement contract to Black Hawk Roof Company of Waterloo, Iowa as the main contractor for a total of $2,873,300. 00. They awarded the main entrance windows to Thief River Glass for $252,768.30.
The term of the project would be about 4 years and 7 months. The next step is to secure a General Obligation bond. They will be sold to investors in June and by July 9 the bond proceeds will be coming to the district. That will be paid back through local property taxes.
Superior Transportation agreement extensions and revisions for bus service for the district. This will be their third year, and they are asking for an increase of 3% per year. They would also like to purchase the four buses that the district owns. The board wants to get an appraisal from two vendors; one from Saint Cloud and one from Big Lake. They tabled the request until they could have a work session after the appraisals.
The next regular school board meeting will be June 15, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.
