An Afternoon of Food, Friends and Fun Information

he Shevlin Garden Club held its annual Spring “Wake-Up” Garden workshop on Saturday March 21.  (The workshop is considered the March meeting)  

Along with the three speakers, the afternoon was filled with friends, food and fun.  Nearly 60 guests were present at the American Legion to enjoy the afternoon of learning.

There is no tilling, less weeding, no erosion from downpours, soil healthier, lots of worms, conserves water, reduced labor, and sustainability.

TLC Greenhouse-Hwy 2 Shevlin

Alecia Reed, TLC Greenhouse is manager shared anbout the greenhouse .  She shared the plants come from Hafner’s Greenhouse Wholesale in Park Rapids.  She only sells annuals, vegetables, herbs, as well as hanging baskets.  She will help you build your pot, just bring your pot and dirt.  The greenhouse opens Mother’s Day weekend.  Hours will be 9-6, seven days a week.

 

 

 Preparing Horticulture Entries For the Fair

Sheila is the librarian in Climax, owner of Ada Tomato in Ada, grows tomatoes for seed for northcircleseeds.com-Minnesota seed company.  Sheila demonstrated that anything could be used a container.  She had beer bottle caps, decorated tuna cans and various plastic containers with wet floral foam in them

and showed the ease to create arrangements.  A note to point out- “when cutting flowers, especially roses, it’s important to so under water”.  She said you can even add viagra to the water to freshen them. 

The Shevlin Garden Club thanks the following for Door Prizes! Everyone went home with a prize! Ace Hardware, Bagley, TLC Greenhouse, Shevlin, Dawn Wann’s-Zerkel, Grow It-Gonvick, Hanson’s Greenhouse-Shevlin, Galen’s Hardware, Clearwater Polk, Connie Nunemaker, Sheila Capistran, Isabel Harmon, and Pamela French.  

The Shevlin garden Club was established April 15, 1952.  Its purpose is to encourage enhanced knowledge of horticulture and promotion of all forms of gardening both at home and in the community, and increase the pleasure there from. It’s motto “ Build a House; Plant a Home”

The next meeting will be April 18 at the Clearwaters Life Center-Gonvick in the Coffee Room @ 1pm.  The program: Integrated Pest Management (IPM), tour of the greenhouses w/ a possibility to make purchases. 

May 23 is the annual plant sale 9am-12pm in the horticultural building at the Clearwater Co. Fairgrounds.  May also begins the monthly tours of various gardens.  The SGC has several very talented people who grew more than green thumbs.  The SGC gives you a chance to experience the beauty.
