Get Involved, Get Connected

Social Connectedness- Week 4 March 22-28, 2026

Get Involved, Get Connected

Social connection can lead to longer life, better health, and well-being, it can improve:  our ability to manage stress, anxiety, depression, healthy eating habits and physical activity and quality of sleep.  While loneliness and isolation have been studied for many years, more research is needed to identify the most effective ways to improve social connection for specific groups, ages and settings.  Many times, we can identify for ourselves what we find to be the most effective ways to improve social connections.  Small acts to build social connections can make a difference and improving social connections can be simple, but meaningful.  Each of us can work to build valuable connections to others in our community and social settings.

Not everyone is comfortable in a room full of strangers.  Some people prefer to participate in a social situation of 3-4 people.  You’re still connecting with your community and building a social network.

Young people may sometimes feel uncomfortable being among people from different age groups, especially when they don’t see others like themselves.  Older adults bring valuable life experience and often have deep connections within their communities, including involvement in activities and networks that may be less familiar to younger generations. Encouraging meaningful, respectful connections between younger and older people, whether with grandparents or other trusted older adults can create opportunities for shared learning, mutual understanding, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved.
