Luverne Howard John Nordlund
Born on April 7, 1931, in Eddy Township, Luverne peacefully entered Heaven on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Luverne grew up south of Clearbrook, where he attended country school at District 55 from 1st to 4th grade. At the age of 10, he was diagnosed with polio. With no available treatment in the area, he courageously took a bus by himself to the University Hospital in Minneapolis, where he received treatment for about a year. Although he spent most of his time at the hospital, during rehab, he stayed with his aunt and attended school in Minneapolis for four months. While going through his treatment, he witnessed the struggles faced by others with polio. The suffering he saw quickly developed in him an attitude of gratitude—a quality that remained woven into the core of who he was. His resilience and determination enabled him to walk again, these traits would serve him well throughout his lifetime.
After graduating from Clearbrook High School, Luverne attended Augsburg University in Minneapolis. He later transferred to Bemidji State Teachers College to be closer to home and help his mom and dad, eventually graduating with a degree in elementary education. Luverne loved his years teaching and thoroughly enjoyed the students and colleagues he worked with. He taught in Sacred Heart, Fosston, International Falls, and retired from teaching in Clearbrook, MN.
While teaching in Fosston, Luverne met the love of his life, Helen. They lived in International Falls for two years before moving to Clearbrook where they settled and raised their family. The home they lived in was built by Luverne. He felled the trees, milled the lumber, dug and poured the basement, framed, sheet rocked, wired, plumbed, and shingled their beloved home.
Luverne was a man of faith and family. He cherished his loved ones, Bible, and his friends. He found joy in the great outdoors, westerns, pie, his dogs, and playing games. He was always willing to stop what he was doing or go out of his way to help someone or pay a visit. His incredible sense of humor lasted until the very end. A highly creative man, Luverne often invented games for his grandkids, which frequently involved imaginative target shooting or a yard frisbee golf course.
Luverne was a man of many talents. He could fix anything, and he often did so while whistling a cheerful tune. Whether it was household repair, farm equipment, or a project for a friend, his hands were always busy, and his heart was full. Luverne was a patient man, slow to anger and quick to love, teaching many lessons simply by being himself and through his deep love for Jesus.
Luverne is survived by his son, Tim (Michelle) Nordlund of Sartell, and their children: Tanner (Mariah), Trever, Tate, and Michayla; his daughter, Suzy (Jeff) Brunsberg of Chaska, and their children: Chloe, Jack, and Anna; and his great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Weston Nordlund.
He is survived by his sisters, Winnie Anderson and Pat (Harry) Toussaint, and sisters-in-law Betty Blankman and Shirley Anderson. He leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and special friends too numerous to name.
Luverne was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his son, Wesley; his parents, Luella and Walfred Nordlund; his sister, Lorraine; his mother- and father-in-law, Anna and Jess; his brothers-in-law, Norman Engen, Mike Sorenson, John Blankman, Don Beaumont, Dale Hall, and Jess Hall; his sisters-in-law, Marvel Beaumont and Becky Hall; his niece Cheryl Stone, and nephews Bruce Beaumont and Dick Engen; and many other precious extended family members.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Good Shepherd Church in Clearbrook on September 28th at 6:00 pm. There will be dessert and coffee served afterwards with an open microphone to share memories. The graveside rights will be held on Sunday, September 29th at 12:30 pm at Oak Park Church.
