Norman Meter passed away on March 10, 2021 at the Cornerstone Residence Senior Care after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
Norman Glen Meter was born on January 19, 1938 to Carl and Lucila Meter in Los Angeles, California. While attending school, Norm held various jobs of delivering newspapers for the Los Angeles Times, renting out boats in Echo Park and working for Mr. Jackson at the collection agency.
Norm graduated from John Marshall High School in 1955 and joined the Untied States Marines in 1955. He was deployed to Korea as a machine gunner and fought in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Marines on May 19, 1959 as a Corporal E-4.
Upon being discharged from the military, Norm worked for his uncle Art at his gas station doing automobile maintenance. He began racing Greeves motorcycles along with his brothers Darrell and Ken through Nicholson Motors in North Hollywood, California. He met and married Patricia in August 1962. Lisa Marie Meter was born to Norman and Patricia. Norm continued working and attended night school and graduated from the National School in Los Angeles as an automotive service mechanic in November of 1969.
The family decided to move to Sheridan, Wyoming. Michael Glen Meter was born. Norm was employed with the Sheridan County Fire Department as a paid firefighter in 1977. He worked with them until 1980 when he was offered a job to work with Sheriff D’Mateo at the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department in Los Cruces, New Mexico. Norm moved his family to Los Cruces, New Mexico. Norm graduated from the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy on November 13, 1980 and began working at the Dona Anna Sheriffs Department as a deputy. He was promoted to Investigator six months later.
His family missed Sheridan, Wyoming so they moved back in 1983 and Norm began working for the Sheridan County Sheriffs Department as a deputy. He became qualified as an NRA police firearms instructor in May 1983 and began teaching firearms training. He opened his business called the 38 Gun Shop and began repairing and selling firearms while working at the Sheriff’s Department. Patricia and Norm were divorced in September of 1985. Norm and Betty Horn were united in marriage on May 28, 1986.
Norm and Betty moved to Bagley, MN and Norm began working for Kmart in Bemidji, MN as a prevention manager. In 1990, Norm began working part time for the Bemidji Police department and began working full time for the Clearwater County Sheriff's Department in March of 1991. Norm worked as an investigator with the Clearwater County Sheriff's Department. He also became their firearms instructor in 1991 and taught classes in the community on gangs. He joined the Headwaters emergency response team in 1996. He retired from law enforcement in 2000.
Norman was fun, loving individual who was very optimistic about life. He was an individual who loved his country and was appreciative of all the men and women who fought and died to keep our freedom. He was a member of the American Legion in Bagley. He loved to watch football (go Vikings!) Norm also enjoyed the outdoors and liked to fish. He had a Harley Davidson motorcycle that he worked on and showed at various motorcycle shows in the State and won awards for. He loved to travel with his wife and they spent time going to casinos. He loved spending time with his family and friends and was always willing to help out. We will miss his smile and easy demeanor and his comment of “You look overworked, take the day off!”
Norman will be remembered by his wife, Betty; his children, Michael Meter and Lisa Meter-Keyes; two granddaughters; a great grandson; his brothers, Kenneth Meter and Darrell Meter; and many other friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lucila Meter; and his brother, Carlos “Chuck” Meter.
Services will be held at a later date. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements. Messages of condolence may be sent to ceasefuneralhome.com
