K&K’s Cafe Opens in Clearbrook

K&K’s Cafe opened on Wednesday, February 13th, providing customers with a place to eat breakfast or lunch in Clearbrook. Sara Bjerke opened her new restaurant at 34 Main Street in Clearbrook at the old AJ’s Restaurant location. Sara took the name K&K from her daughters, Kaydence Jorgenson who is eleven years old, and Kaylie Bjerke, who is nine.
Although owning her own restaurant is new to Sara, she brings a lifetime of restaurant experience. Sara started washing dishes with Reva Anderson at the Hitching Rail Restaurant in Shevlin when she was just 9 years old. When Reva took over the D&R Café in 2000, Sara started working there as waitress and cook and she has worked at the D&R Cafe until now.
Sara’s friends and family have been encouraging her to open her own restaurant for some time. As various restaurant opportunities have become available in the area, she has been thinking about making this change. When Sara heard about AJ’s closing, she felt this location would be a good choice, partly since she lives close to Clearbrook. She also knew people in the area were hoping the restaurant would reopen, especially for the breakfast and lunch hours.
Taking the leap to open her own restaurant was a challenge for Sara, but she knew if she didn’t do it, she might regret it. Getting to know new people is Sara’s favorite part of running K&K’s so far. While she is enjoying meeting her new customers, it was hard for Sara to leave all of her regular customers at the D&R Café. She likes that many have stopped in to see her at the new location.
Sara’s family and friends have been very supportive of her new opportunity. Her husband, John, has helped with maintenance issues. Sara’s mom LaRae Martine has been lending a hand at the restaurant. Like Sara, LaRae has done restaurant work all her life. Sara’s sisters and friends have also been helping at the restaurant.
On weekends, Sara will be serving breakfast all day. During the week, breakfast is served until 11:00 a.m. Breakfast items on the menu include a variety of omelets, country fried steak, eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast, and several breakfast sandwiches. Lunch customers will be able to choose from a variety of burgers and other sandwiches such as BLT’s, French dips, and Ruebens. Basket choices include chicken tenders, chicken drummies, walleye fingers, and shrimp. Soups, salads, and appetizers are also available. Many choices for kids are offered on the menu, too. Sara will offer daily specials, such as a hot sandwich or soup and sandwich.
The current hours for the new café are Mondays through Fridays from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The hours for Saturday will be from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. On Sundays, the café will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The hours may vary in the summer.
