Year in Review....

March 7: The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) was excited to exhibit Midwest Grain, a collection of watercolor paintings by Debbie Aune, which feature familiar landmarks to all of us living in northwest Minnesota: grain elevators. A longtime artist of Gatzke, Minnesota, Debbie grew up on a small farm in northern Minnesota, and recalls her early fascination with these historical structures. One of the paintings featured the Gully Elevator.

The Riverwatch team placed fifth in the Riverwatch Forum Competition. The students had to create a service project and a video explaining what they accomplished. RLCC members of Riverwatch: (Front) Erin Jones, Advisor Ms. Shelley Steva, Sidney Olson; (Back) Britain Arlt, Tanisha Srnsky, Brandie DeHate, Kaitlyn Morris, Courtney Rude, and Garrett Qualley.

The Red Lake County’s Rebels Boys’ Basketball won 66 to  48 against the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears February 23, 2018 in Clearbrook. The Rebels put up 37 percent and the Bears shot 28 percent throughout the game. On the free throw line, RLC shot 62 percent and Clearbrook-Gonvick shot 25 percent.

Four Mustang wrestlers placed at the Section 8A Wrestling Tournament: Nick Pahlen-3rd, George Duden-5th, Tristyn Ferguson-6th, and Damon Ferguson-4th.

Today began with the sun shining, but it didn’t last. The prediction is for rain followed by snow. 

March 14: The Red Lake County Central Student Senate gathered at the Spring Summit Tuesday, February 28th at Lincoln High School. Participating were Cari Bachand, Aurimy Olson, Taya Morinville, Jayden Fore, Kara Longtin, Gerald Melin,Lily Guillimette, Erin Jones, Karena Melby, Jade Person, Kia Bachand, Julia Bernstein, Dawson Rystad, Sydney Melby, Britain Arlt, Jenna Pahlen, and Calyssa Eskeli. Their advisor was Mr. Randy Huie.

At the Red Lake County Central High School Gymnasium on March 3, 2018, there was a presentation about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Kelly, Michelle, and Stacy from the Violence Intervention Project spoke to the RLCC students and staff about abusive relationships and consent. February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness month.

March 21: RLCC High School Theater will be presenting its first musical in over 35 years next month named, SOMETHING’S AFOOT by James Mcdonald, David Vos and Robert Gerlach and by special arrangement by Samuel French Inc. This musical comedy is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s TEN LITTLE INDIANS. It is a great who dun it. 

In an emergency, dialing 911 is a call for help. But people with hearing loss or those who must remain quiet in a dangerous situation aren’t able to place a call safely or at all. That’s why the Department of Public Safety Emergency Communication Networks (DPS-ECN) has worked with stakeholders around Minnesota to develop Text-to-911 on Minnesota’s Next Generation 911 (NG911) network. DPSECN announced today that Minnesotans are now able to use the service throughout the state.

Slow melting has been the word of the week. There is much ice out on the landscape, and the slow melting is keeping the ice around longer than we wish for. But spring is coming this week. On Wednesday we can say spring is here but the other shoe can still drop and hammer us hard. 

March 28: Gretchen Revering, a 2015 Alexandria Area High School graduate, Frankie & Shirley Cyr’s granddaughter was the featured story because she recently got hired to work as a federal agent. She will officially be a U.S. Capitol Police officer.

The RLC 5th grade boys took first in the Goodridge elementary basketball tournament. The boys defeated Roseau and BGMR scoring a total of 75 points and giving up only 8! Participating were Ryan Tvedt, Ethan Majeres, Gavin Thomas, Kane Nelson,  Owen Chervestad, Guy Bergeson, Luke Peterson, Hunter Dudycha,Hayz Hanson. Their coach was Angel Bergeson.
