Vernon Hamnes has been the treasurer for Pine Lake Township for the past 34 years. He has decided that he has served enough. The township officers honored him at their meeting on Monday, October 8 a t the Gonvick Legion cabin where they have their regular monthly meetings.
Vernon started as treasurer in 1984 and he took over the position that had been previously held by his father Melvin Hamnes. Melvin had served the township starting in 1936. The position has been taken over by Pam Goebel.
The two main issues that he has been concerned with over the years is keeping the finances solid and the 28 miles of road that they are responsible for. Tommy Maruska is the one who runs the plow and grader for the township.
He and his wife started out farming and milking cows for 34 years. He could not have done that without the help of his wife Beverly and their children, Debbie, Dean, Dale and Danny.
Besides the farming Vernon had the Farmers Mutual Insurance office in Gonvick for 15 years with his wife and he drove the fuel oil truck for Berg Oil.
Vernon was active on several boards including Garden Valley Telephone Company, Clearwater-Polk Electric, MN Rural Electric, Gonvick-Trail School Board, Samhold Lutheran Church Council and Clearwater County Rural Development.
