This year, one of the improvements at Red Lake County Central High School, was the installation of two new water fountains for drinking and for filling your reusable water bottles. They have filters purifying the water and you can see how much water has been run through the filters on the top of the fountain.

Ten town hall meetings have been scheduled in communities across Minnesota. These town hall meetings are free to attend and open to the public. The discussion is about water quality in Minnesota.

The Red Lake County Rebels moved to 2-0 on the season with a 40-8 win over Cass Lake-Bena on August 31st. All of the Rebels dressed for the game got action as the team performed well in many areas.

The second trip for R & B Travels - The Next Generation  took a road trip Saturday.  Our destination was Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Florian. I’d heard a lot about this church and my hope was to get inside to see the sanctuary. We were so excited that we would maybe get inside to look around. Well, when we got there everyone else in the area was getting there at the same time as us. Everyone was all dressed up for what appeared to be a wedding. We weren’t dressed to take in the wedding, so we just admired the beauty of the outside of the church.

The Chautauqua French Canadian/Metis Festival was held at Huot Park on the 25th, 26th & 27th. There was a broom maker, bread baking, bead work for kids, an ox cart, tow wigwams and French meat pies for sale in the food tent. The Ashom Stompers from Winnipeg performed again.

The Red Lake County Environmental Office and the Red Lake County Sheriff’s Office have teamed up to provide a pharmaceutical waste collection site at the Courthouse in Red Lake Falls. The waste receptacle is located on the ground floor of the Courthouse, in the hallway across from the Sheriff’s Office entrance. Residents can now bring in pharmaceutical waste and dispose of it there.

46th Annual Blast To Brooks was held this past weekend. Grand Marshals for the Blast to Brooks parade were Cindy and Del Determan who have been very active in the City of Brooks for many, many years. Kick'N Up Kountry had a unique float that blew bubbles and shot out flames to advertise their 2018 event. There were several rounds of pig races that drew a large crowd of spectators cheering on their favorite piglets. Between races there were games for children and adults which kept the crowd involved during the entire pig racing event. Of course there was the great car show for everyone to enjoy. 

Red Lake County Central Principal Randy Pederson started the first morning back to school speaking to the high school students in the gymnasium. Peterson talked about the new RLCC High School rules. He encouraged the students to have a good year.

A 50 year class reunion was held at the Plummer Legion on Saturday evening. For supper they served smoked chicken and smoked ribs. Jane Kolstoe arganized it. There were 26 in this class.

Irene Rosten, of Oklee, was announced as one of the winners of the Mary Magdalene Award at the NW MN Synodical Convention held at Fair Hills Resort on Sept 14 & 15. One winner was announced for each conference in the NW MN Synod. Irene, who was nominated for the award by the Salem WELCA, was the winner for Conference Two.

The “Class of 67” held their 50th Class reunion during the weekend of September 9th in Oklee. Attending were: Lyla Parsley Dobson, Ardis LaJambe Hofstad, Elaine Hofstad Broker, Emily Nadeau Bernier, Mary Melby Rindahl, Suzanne Grove St Michel, Allen Bluemke, Wayne Olson, Gary Halvorson, Peggy Person Schumacher, Susan Peterson James, Debbie Radniecki Perreault, Susan Solheim Jeuch, Carol Lerohl Sanders, Jack Sundrud, Vernon Berg, Cliff Melby, Daryl Schumacher, Don Rindahl, and Mike Sletto.

A Magnell Reunion was held on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Oklee Community Center. The last reunion was held in 2012. Wes Magnell, Sr., was the emcee for the day. Family history books and genealogy were available for viewing and reminiscing. 

Jerome and Barb Novak celebrated thei r 55th anniversary on Friday. They went to dinner at Lakeview in Mentor. 

September 27, 2017

On 09/20/17,  a Red Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy was doing a welfare check on a person in Oklee. At approximately 7:50pm, Red Lake County officers found Mr. Hamlin deceased in an upstairs bedroom, from injuries resulting from a single, selfinflicted, gunshot wound. 

The 2017-2018 school year at Red Lake County Central High School began Tuesday, September 5. Two additional students were enrolled. They are Danny Guillemette and Marissa Schiebe.

The weather has changed from drought to almost too much water for the season. We had 3 and three-quarter inches this past week.
