Year in Review continued

Many cars entered the pit to race on Sunday, June 25th during the Red Lake County Fair. Despite the wind and the on and off rain showers at the Red Lake County Fair’s Baja Race there were many people that attended and many cars that raced.

Natalie Aakhus is the recipient of an Excellence Scholarship to attend Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. Aakhus, a graduate of Red Lake County Central High School, is the daughter of Jason and Roberta Aakhus, Oklee, Minn.

Kids Pedal Pull Winners were: 4 year old winners were  2nd Place Ellie Halverson, 1st Jacob Lee, and 3rd Brett Anderson; Age 5 winners were  2nd Place Liam Magnell, 1st Place Aubrey Halverson, and Karter Dallmann 3rd; Age 6 winners were  2nd Place Emmitt Melin, 1st Ray Srnsky, and Parker Lundeen 3rd; 7 year old winners were Evan Wagner 2nd, Peyton Jensen 1st, and Gunnar Broden 3rd; Age 8 winners were 2nd Place Hayden Shulstad, 1st Jett Hanson, and 3rd Keaton Dallmann; 9 year old winners were 2nd Place Kegan Schmitz, 1st Nolan Lundeen, and 3rd Gavin Thomas; Age 10 winners were  2nd Place Kane Nelson, 1st Everett Svendsen,and 3rd Hayz Hanson.

Friday night's Rodeo crowd was big, but Saturdays night crowd was bigger at the Red Lake County Fair. This was the first year that a rodeo was part of the Fair and it was a great addition.

The Mini Bronco Riding had some familiar names from the area: (Melin and Magnell).

The winners of the 5K Run at the RLC Fair were (L to R) 19-40 male, Travis Lason with a time of 25:58, 18 and under male, Brock Tvedt with a time of 22:27, 41 and over male, Done Hagen with a time of 22:47, 18 and under female, Katelyn Wagner with a time of 27:09, 19-40 female, Jennifer Johnson with a time of 29:52, and 41 and over female, Connie Wavra with a time of 30:12.

Many people came out in the beautiful weather for the Customer Appreciation Picnic on Thursday, June 29th held by the Security State Bank. Everyone was served with tacos in a bag, soda, coffe, or water, ice cream and homemade goodies by the workers of the bank.

It sure was a hot 4th of July, but that did not stop people from coming out to the annual 4th of July Celebration in Plummer. Many fun activities were held including the Parade. The Parade had many cool cars, nice restored tractors, and many floats.

Vi Cote was awarded Red Lake County Outstanding Citizen, and was introduced by John Lerohl. Many seniors from around the county gathered in the Oklee Community Hall and listened to a number of speakers that included LeRoy Stumpf, retired State Senator who now works for Congressman Collin Peterson. 

The Red Lake County 4-H Leader’s Council presented $250 scholarships to these members. They are Shelby Gunderson and Sarah Quick. This scholarship program is open to graduating Red Lake County High School Seniors who have been active 4-H Members for at least three  years.

RLCC had enough players for 2 PeeWee teams this summer. RLCC White is playing RLCC Red to get into the A division championship at Clearbrook. And RLCC Red won the A Division Championship.

The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources announced two additional resources for landowners working to come into compliance with the state’s buffer law. The buffer law requires the implementation of a buffer strip on public waters by November 1, 2017 and a buffer on public drainage ditches by November 1, 2018. These additional resourses are a Cost Sharing Program and a One Stop Website.

The University of Minnesota recently released a new hard red spring wheat variety called ‘Lang-MN.’ This new variety is well suited for much of the spring wheat-growing region. Lang- MN has yielded equal to the popular varieties Faller and Lang-MN Wheat Trial held in Oklee Prosper, but with higher protein. It also quite disease resistant, specifically in regards to scab, stripe and stem rust. Plots of Lang-MN and competing varieties are being tested at on-farm trials across Minnesota.
