Red Lake County 4-H Honored for Afterschool Programming

Afterschool programs play an important role in helping young people do better in school and make positive choices and the Red Lake County 4-H Afterschool Programs have been recognized for their quality by a statewide organization.

Ignite Afterschool, Minnesota’s statewide network of afterschool programs, honored Red Lake County 4-H Program Coordinator Sharon Weiss with the Minnesota Afterschool Champion Award.  This award recognizes individuals whose practices enhance the quality of and access to afterschool programs for all youth.  The Red Lake County 4-H Afterschool Program is available in the three sites in Red Lake County for youth in Kindergarten through sixth grade.  Sharon provides leadership opportunities for older youth in these afterschool programs by involving them in planning, delivering and evaluating the program. Through Sharon’s leadership, the Red Lake County 4-H Afterschool Program adapts to meet the needs of the community, resulting in full capacity of the programs.  Learning opportunities are extended through materials sent home to support parents in helping their child continue to learn.  Youth in the programs look forward to the programs each time they are offered.
