Fire Prevention Week observed at school

Fire Prevention Week was October 8 to the 14. Students at Clearbrook-Gonvick Elementary made posters for the fire departments to judge.
They included on their posters, “Every Second counts - Plan two ways out.”
Representatives of the Clearbrook and Gonvick Fire Departments were on hand with their trucks for the children to look. They also handed out water bottles to the three grades, first, second and third.
The Overall Winner in the poster contest was Ja’Nya Hardy Martin, a second grade student in Brenda Faldets class.
Fire Safety Checklist:
Install and maintain a working smoke alarm outside of every sleep area and remember to change the battery at least once a year.
Designate two escape routes from each bedroom and practice them regularly.
Teach everyone the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” technique in case clothing catches on fire.
Avoid storing old mattresses in the home or garage.
Teach kids that matches, lighters and candles are tools, not toys. If you suspect that a child is playing with fire, check under beds and in closets for telltale signs like burned matches. Matches and lighters should be stored in a secure drawer or cabinet.
President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week on October 4-10, 1925, beginning a tradition of the President of the United States signing a proclamation recognizing the occasion. It is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began October 8, 1871, and did most of its damage October 9.
