Taking the win by only 2 votes, the new municipal building in McIntosh, formally Variety Village will be offically named the Ohnstad Building.
The building is named after Dr. Jens L Ohnstad, a physician in McIntosh from 1903 to 1943.
One biographer commented: "Dr. Ohnstad has gained a wide reputation for his skill and professional achievements and his able services have been distinguished by notable victories over serious epidemics of malignant diseases, he is that type who, by their broad, progressive and unselfish service, furnishes the substantial support of the welfare of any community and has made a most honorable record as a physician and as a citizen."
Dr. Ohnstad built the first hospital in town in 1918 on North State Street. The second floor was entirely a hospital. The first floor was divided into living quarters in the south half, Dr. Ohnstad's office, waiting room and treatment room in the north.
The character of this man is summarized by this comment from his obituary: "Through long years, as a professional man and as a member of the community he has always striven to do his best. Quietly and without ostentation, he has been the embodiment of the belief, 'That it is better to give than to receive'."
