Irene Rosten Receives Mary Magdalene Award

Irene Rosten, of Oklee,  was announced as one of the winners of the Mary Magdalene Award at the NW MN Synodical Convention held at Fair Hills Resort on Sept 14 & 15. One winner was announced for each conference in the NW MN Synod.   Irene, who was nominated for the award by the Salem WELCA, was the winner for Conference Two. The Synod officers then chose the winners based on the nominating essays. While many ladies could be nominated from the various churches in the conference, only one winner was chosen per conference.  The winners each received a long stem red rose, a framed certificate, and a $25 donation was made to a charity of the winner’s choice. Pathways was Irene’s choice.

Mary Magdalene Award is given to women who exemplify “ Go and tell.”  John tells us that after the Resurrection, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene and instructed her to “Go to my brothers and tell them.” John 20:17.  In response, Mary Magdalene went to the Disciples with the news. “I have seen the Lord! And she told them that He had said these things to her.”  John 20:18.

Part of Irene’s nominating essay reads:

Through the giving and sharing of her talents, Irene’s actions spread the Good News and tell of God’s love.  For almost 60 years, 59 to be exact, Irene Rosten has been sharing her talents with the Salem Congregation and beyond. Irene has held every office in Salem WELCA over the years, serving as treasurer for 15 years.  She rarely misses a meeting. For numerous years she was on the altar committee, seeing that the correct colors were up and the wine and bread were ready for communion. She still fills in when someone can’t do their Sunday.   

Irene has taught Sunday School, been a Foster Grandparent in the local school, and made too many quilts to count for Lutheran World Relief and local charities. Irene does many things without being asked.  For example, when she sees that it needs to be done, she cleans the church. Secondly, Irene keeps the supply of confirmation and baptism gifts from Thrivent updated as needed.  Finally, our basement dining room tables have beautiful centerpieces that get changed with the seasons.  Irene quietly goes about doing this with most people being unaware.  These are just some examples of Irene doing things without being asked.

Tirelessly working for the Lord, whether asked by others or not, Irene spreads the Joy of the Lord.  Her selfless acts of kindness and service exemplify  “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
