The Rychlock boys were in it to win it

Jerry and Holly Rychlock, of rural Grygla, have been attending the MSRA Back to the 50’s Car Show for over 30 years now. Held June 23-25 on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in Saint Paul, at least 11,000 cars were shown this year! Driving their ’36 Ford 3-Window Coupe to the show, their son, Jeremy also brought a vintage ride, hauling a ’52 GMC Suburban.
“Jeremy has been coming with us forever,” Holly laughed. “But the last 4-5 years, we’ve been making it a family trip with the grandkids, too!” Jeremy, Elaine and their two sons, Blake and Brett, enjoy the annual trip to the cities each year now, too. “Between those three days, they estimated about a million spectators at the fairgrounds,” Holly offered.
At the car show, nothing newer than a ’65 is allowed. The Rychlocks pre-register their vehicles, drive them in on the premises and get them set up to show. However, they don’t compete for any awards and say they just enjoy going for the fun! Staying in a hotel while there, the crew does bring a canopy tent, along with a table and chairs to set up at the fairgrounds where they hang out all day and cook food while enjoying the atmosphere.
Jerry’s brother, Dave, who lives in Wisconsin, joined the group for the occasion and brought his 1929 Model A pickup to show.
Grandma and Grandpa might not be in it to win it when it comes to the car show, but their grandkids had another thing in mind! Blake and Brett, who both attend Grygla Public School, decided to enter the tractor pull that was held that Saturday, the 24th. With ages 4-11 pulling, both boys signed up and walked away with 1st place trophies for their age group. 11 year old Blake pulled an impressive 120 pounds at 30 feet, 10.5 inches! His brother, Brett, who is 8, pulled 95 pounds and went 37 feet! “It was kind of tough….I almost lost,” he said ever so seriously.
All in all, the Back to the 50’s car show was a success for the family. Fun was had by all, a lot of classic cars were shown, including two of their own, and the youngest Rychlock boys earned themselves some pretty impressive bragging rights! We can file that under “GREAT FAMILY FUN!”
