Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears honored at banquet

The Winter Sports Banquet was held at the Clearbrook-Gonvick School on Monday, April 13. A meal served by the kitchen staff at the school was prepared for parents, grandparents, friends and players. 

All-Conference players for the boys team were announced a few weeks ago. Sam Lavin was All-Conference and Hunter Churness was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. They received their awards along with the first time letter winners for the team.

Head Coach Mike Rettinger announced that captains for next year would be Hunter Churness and Sam Lavin who will both be seniors next year. Rettinger stated that the players had to learn a new style, new skills and change old habits with the new coaching staff. He also stated that they did not make their goals but the boys showed the meaning of Bear Pride. He went on to say that summer is a time to condition and practice with intense workouts. Your improvments will help the team. Rettinger was assisted by Sam Weaver.

Coach Ross Faldet for the girls team introduced the girls and announced the all conference winners for the season

Junior Madison Stenzel was named Northwoods First Team All-Conference. She was a team leader in 

Defensive Rebounds and Free Throw percentages. She was second on the team in points with 496, she had nine double doubles. Her game high was 31 points scored against Red Lake broke the school record held by Karlie Watne and Heidi Kjolhaug. She also broke her own record when she scored 38 points against Cass Lake. Madison also broke a 10 year old record by Katie Anderson with 16 fields goals scored in the same game. She scored her 1000th point against Nevis on February 10. She was the sixth player and first junior to get that honor for the school.

Sophomore Liz Bodensteiner was also named as Northwood’s First Team All-Conference and Northwood’s “Playmaker of the Year.”  She led the team this year in points with 573, She had a game high 28 points against Sacred Heart on December 2. The same game she made 14 of 15 free throws which went into the State Record Books, She made a school record of 310 rebounds in a season passing the old record set by Madison Stenzel. She broke the record of Brittany Wagner with 14 steals in a game against Laporte. She broke the school record of Heidi Kjolhaug with 226 field goals in a season. She also had 17 double double games.

Junior Rachel Spray was named to the 2nd Team All-Conference. She was the team leader in assists with 144 and blocked shots. She was second in steals and she had a game high of 12 points against Walker in the 8A Sub-section game. She was 3 for 3 from the 3 point line.

Sophomore Hanah Lavin was named to the 2nd Team All-Conference. She was second on the team in assists and had a game high 15 points against Cass Lake December 11. She broke the school record held by Rebecca Gunvalson and Brooke Wraa with 10 of 10 free  throws  in a game against Kelliher/Northome.

Sophomore Carlie Bergerson was also named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention. She was first on the team with the number of three pointers made. She had a game high 16 points against Red Lake County Central.

Sophomore Alison Johnson was named All-Conference Honorable Mention. She had a game high of 11 points against Blackduck on January 27.

The only Senior on the team,  Rachel Gray has been with the program for many years but was not able to play this year received a Senior Award for her work as the statistician for the team. 

Other players honored with Varsity letters were Junior Lydia Lindenfelser, Sophomore Sam Mart with a game high 6 points against Walker.

Freshmen included Brynn Hetland who scored her first varsity point against Sacred Heart. She had a game high of 13 points against Blackduck on December 15. Also scoring their first varsity points were Morgan Cornell against Lapporte on 2/23; Mikayla Johnson against Cass Lake on 1/26; Tamara Skinaway against Red Lake County Central on 2/24; Madelynne Faldet against Red Lake County Central on 2/17, Cassie Faldet against Stephen Argyle on 12/1. She also was first in 3 point percentage and second in 3’s made for the season.

The team won the 8A East Subsection Championship  and they were the Northwoods Conference runner-up after Pine River-Backus. They won the All-Academic Team honors with a 3.73 over all Grade Point Average.

The Junior Varsity team won their conference this year.
