The French Club goes to Winnipeg

The French I and French II classes from Red Lake Falls, Red Lake County Central, and Breckenridge had the opportunity to go to Winnipeg for a French Trip. Lynn Vatthauer from Red Lake Falls is the ITV instructor for the class and planned the trip. Also chaperoning on the trip was Stephanie Halland from RLCC. The trip took place March 26-27th.
A chartered bus from Bemidji arrived at the RLCC School at 9:00 a.m. to pick up the students and continued on to pick up the students in Plummer. The next stop was in RLF to pick up their students and Breckenridge’s students. The group arrived in Winnipeg and went to the St. Vital Shopping Mall for lunch and to do some shopping. After shopping the students checked in to their hotel, Best Western Plus Pembina and Suites.
After enjoying the French cuisine dinner at the RestoGare Bistro, the group went to the Winnipeg Jets vs. Vancouver Cannucks hockey game. This was first professional hockey game most of the students had ever seen. The pace of the game was much faster than any of the local hockey teams. The MTS Center arena was pretty packed with fans cheering for both teams. The majority of the students were cheering for the Jets. The game was a low scoring game with the Jets winning 2-1 over the Cannucks. After the hockey game the group went back to the hotel and did some swimming.
Monday the group went to the St. Boniface Museum and learned about the history of Manitoba. A really cool tour guide was very animated telling about Manitoba. He explained about Louis Riel who was the founder of Manitoba, the St. Boniface Cathedral, and the three fires that destroyed most of the cathedral.
The students then went to the Promenade Café for lunch. After lunch they boarded the bus and left for home.
French students from RLCC who went on the trip were Jarisa Bailey, Julia Bernstein, Andrew Fish, Grace Gieseke, Billie Gryskiewicz, Austin Jensen, Daphney Koralewski, Tasha Manning, and Adrien Verbout. Those from RLF included Ben Cardinal, Abbie Johanneck, Kenna Maurstad, Tyee Seeger, and Rachel Wieland. Students from Breckenridge were Tanner Differding, Justice Pfeifer, Maggie Rick, and Lucas Simmer.
One of the students, Austin Jensen, said what he liked about the trip was learning how the St. Boniface Cathedral was burned down and what caused the three fires. He also tried snail which he really disliked and tried a dish called Poutine that he really enjoyed. He also commented that at the Winnipeg Jets game, he “got dabbed on by the Jets mascot.”
About the hockey game Andrew Fish commented, “Our seats were very high up, which was okay, but they were also behind the net.” He had also hoped to throw his hat in the event of a hat trick, but that didn’t happen. He enjoyed eating the flourless chocolate cake. “The consistency was weird but the taste was great”.
Jarisa Bailey really enjoyed the trip to Winnipeg which “was fun and memorable.” Her favorite part was the hockey game because she had never been to a professional hockey game before. She enjoyed the café foods the most because they were fancy. She was also surprised that the buildings were so close together and angled.
