Clearbrook-Gonvick school board approves Extended Day program

The Clearbrook-Gonvick School Board at their meeting on Monday, November 21 approved the Extended Day Program for Kindergarten to fourth grade students. The program will run from 3:11 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on regular scheduled school days. The program is being put in place for parents who need a place for their young students to be until they can pick them up at the school. The program will not cost the district as it will be paid by the families participating. Pre-Pay for the service will be done at the school office for the upcoming year. The charge will cover the cost to the school district for persons who will be in charge of the students. Extended care is based upon a daily rate charge of $6.00 and charges will be made if pickup of the child is not made by 5:30 p.m. The plan is to start after the Christmas vacation break.

Sarah Goudge gave the Spotlight of Education slide presentation on what has been happening in the classrooms. There were pictures of various activities that took place in the classrooms from the entire school. There will be the annual Toy Drive that has started and Knowledge Bowl and One-Act Play practice has started.

Superintendents Report

Superintendent Wayne Olson reported that in the last legislative session they approved the program for four-year old children. Some school districts received money to implement in their districts. Others would have to wait for the next round of money to be released. The free and reduced lunch program numbers are important to getting the money for the district. For each person that has applied for the free and reduced lunch program the district receives between 8 and 10 thousand dollars in extra income for each student. Olson will be meeting with staff members Andrea, Stacy and Mary on staffing and room situations for the program. 

The auditors are almost done with the yearly audit and the final results will be brought to the December board meeting by the auditors. Preliminary reports are that the General Fund has improved to over $500,000. 

The district is still looking for a Developmental Cognitive Disability (DCD) position person. A Masters’ Degree is needed as the standards for obtaining a DCD degree has increased. There are several districts seeking a person to fill the DCD positions. If they can’t find a person to fill the position they would have to check with BRIC to handle which would be more expensive. They would have to let them know by January if that is the direction that they want to go.

New school board member Kris Snyder has been sent the materials for the board meetings. He will take his position in January. He will be attending Phase I and Phase II of board training.

Board members Tracy, Richard and Tom will have a date for meeting on the facilities.

Personnel

They approved the hiring of Paul Nelson as the Junior varsity Basketball Coach and Chris Westrum as the Junior High Basketball Coach. They accepted the resignation of Gary Prosser as Head Volleyball Coach. 

Kyle Christianson, the school activities director went over the coaching staffing for the volleyball position that will be open for two weeks. He presented information on the Cross Country program that was new this year. 

The board approved going ahead with the program with John Lavin in charge. There are 24 girls out for junior high basketball and that is too much for one coach. The board approved the hiring of a second coach for this year with the high numbers.

The World’s Best Workforce Report was approved by the board.

Dates for the January and February meetings were set so as not to conflict with the Monday holidays in those months. They will meet on January 9 and February 23 for those two months and then remain with the third Monday of each month for the rest of the year.
