RLCC’s team places 7th at State Envirothon

Red Lake County Central’s junior class State Envirothon team went to the Minnesota State Envirothon contest on Monday, May 16. They came in seventh place out of 24 teams. The team members were Angel Auman, Ashley Longtin, Megan Berberich, Nikki Schmitz, and Kelsie Sirjord. The State Competition took place at Lake Bronson State Park near Lake Bronson, MN.
This event is an outdoor academic competition where students are tested on knowledge of wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soil, and land use. Test questions for each of the five resource stations were prepared by natural resource professionals from various organizations. Students are also required to compose and present a 10 minute oral presentation on a current events issue which this year was hydrilla. They also had to answer questions from the judges.
The State Envirothon is way harder than the Regional competition which includes 20 multiple choice questions. At State there are 25 fill-in-the-blank questions requiring greater knowledge of the subject being tested.
The top three teams were: first place-St. Johns Prep with a score of 121, second place-Frazee, and third place-Hopkins. RLCC’s team scored 111 points, only ten points less than the first place team. RLCC’s Envirothon coach Mr. Steve Strutz commented this was a very close competition.
