Jean Gibson passed away last week at the age of 100. She was the original Rosie the Riveter. She was born in Minnestoa and went out to Seattle to work in the airline industry doing work on airplanes for the war effort in 1944. A few years ago, I did a story on two local ladies who lived in the apartments in Gonvick who went out to Seattle as well to do the work. They were Gonvick’s Rosie the Riveters. When they first got there they worked on the inside of the plane and later were moved to the outside to do the riveting after they got experience.
I read on Becky Colebanks facebook page that she was looking for information on Clarence Jordet. With all the books that we have published for area towns I got busy and started looking. The Gully-Trail Diamond Jubilee book from 1985 and Gully book, all 8oo and some pages, had some great pictures of Clarence Jordet. It had him hauling a pile of logs and with his cow among others. A request had been made from a man in France who has been tending his grave site at the Normandy American Center at Colleville-sur-Mer in France. He wanted to know a little about the man. Clarence was killed in action on Omaha Beach during World War. A Memorial service was held for him at Bethlehem Lutheran church with Rev. J.O. Jovaag officiating. He was 29 years old.

Clearwater County Fair 2026!
This August, Clearwater County Fair celebrates its 119th year in memory of Betty Lou Johnson. That's our Betty, wife of Duane Johnson, both were devoted volunteers here at the center for many years. Betty loved the fair! As do I and many others. Fair days are August 5 - 9. May we all be blessed with pleasant weather, warm reunions with friends greeted on the fairgrounds, and much joy & laughter!

We collect used eyeglasses in the Leader-Record and Richards Publishing office in Gonvick. They are for the Lions Club.
Minnesota voters are deciding this fall whether schools should get more money from a state trust fund. The constitutional amendment would increase payouts from the Permanent School Fund. The fund was established in 1858 with proceeds from the sale of timber and minerals. Supporters say the change could give districts more flexible funding without raising taxes. Advocates are trying to raise awareness of the amendment because ballots with the question left blank will be counted as no votes against the proposal.

Vacation Bible School at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook will be Rainforest Falls Exploring the Nature of God. Dates are set for August 11 to 13 pm 9:00 a.m. to noon. Bring your own lunches. Look for registration information to be mailed. Open to kids going into Grades 1 to 5.

Phil Juve, the Fosston Police Chief will be retiring December 15.
The Clearbrook Dental office is open three days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They are open from 8:00 to 4:00 p.m. Call Dr. Richard Johnson at 218-776-3558.
The Altru Clinic in Erskine will be closing as of August 14, 2026. They do have clinics in Crookston, Thief River Falls and Red Lake Falls.
Tasha Sohler the site manager of the Clearbrook-Gonvick Superior Transportation Bus services will now be the site manager for the Fosston School district. They have taken on Superior Transportation as service their district as well. She will be busy.
The 27-mile Wildlife Drive within the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area will be open Aug. 8-9. The self-guided tour allows visitors to experience wetland, woodland, brushland and grassland habitats, providing ample opportunities for wildlife viewing. Roseau River WMA managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and located 20 miles northwest of Roseau, is part of the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail, which consists of 45 sites spanning a 223-mile corridor in the northwestern part of the state.
Tom Lano, the Voice of Fosston radio is retiring after 35 years of broadcasting. He was honored last week at the Kloster Park in Clearbrook when the Fosston Babe Ruth Baseball team met the Clearbrook-Gonvick team. He threw out the first pitch.
The History Center in Shevlin Began Summer Hours. The History Center in Shevlin started its summer hours. The museum and historical buildings are now open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-4:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. There are all new exhibits in the main gallery and several new items inside the historic buildings. Free admission, donations welcome.
