National Night Out
National Night Out is an annual community-building event that promotes partnerships between law enforcement, fire departments, emergency responders, public health, and the communities they serve. Held on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out encourages neighbors to get to know one another, strengthen community connections, and work together to create safer, healthier neighborhoods.
Getting to know your neighbors can make a difference. Strong neighborhoods often experience increased communication, greater trust, and a stronger sense of belonging. When neighbors look out for one another, they are more likely to notice suspicious activity, assist during emergencies, and support one another during times of need.
Many communities celebrate National Night Out with neighborhood gatherings, block parties, cookouts, games, safety demonstrations, and visits from local police officers, firefighters, emergency medical services, and other community organizations. These events provide an opportunity to learn about local resources, crime prevention, emergency preparedness, and public health services in a fun and welcoming environment.
If you attend a National Night Out event, remember a few simple safety tips: Stay hydrated, especially if temperatures are high. Use sunscreen and seek shade when spending time outdoors. Supervise children and establish a meeting place if attending a large event. Wear insect repellent if mosquitoes or ticks are present. Practice food safety by keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold and wash your hands before eating whenever possible.
National Night Out is also a great opportunity to discuss emergency preparedness with your family. Make sure everyone knows important phone numbers, how to contact one another during an emergency, and where to meet if you become separated.
Strong communities are built one neighbor at a time. By participating in National Night Out, you help strengthen relationships, build trust, and create a safer, healthier place to live for everyone.
