Three people have joined the Red Lake County Central High School staff. Two individuals, Jodi Bachand and Vicki Duden, were recently hired as para- professionals to work with students at the high school. Both have substituted as  paras prior to their full time employment. One new teacher, Craig Swanson, was also hired.

The Red Lake County Commissioners met on September 26, 2017, Jennifer Maleitzke, community relations consultant, and John Feely, both from Enbridge came before the commissioners with information on the Line 3 project. The last round of public hearings start on September 26th in Thief River to collect public input from 18 hearings in 9 different areas. A judge will be presiding over the hearings and will give their opinion if the permit for Certificate of Need and Route Permit of the Line 3 replacement at the end to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), who makes the final decision sometime in April of 2018.

Falcons nip Rebels: Fertile-Beltrami came to Red Lake Falls on Monday, September 25th to take on the Rebels in Junior Varsity football action. Both teams would start of homecoming week with a hard fought football game.

Rain, rain go away. Sunday was a dreary day with mist and rain all day. Some of the bean harvesters got done with a lot of acreage on Saturday, but now that it rained again it will be a while before they can finish more harvesting. Early this Monday morning it poured rain for quite a while.

The Minnesota Red River Valley Development Association has sponsored a $100 Youth Leadership Award to be given to a Red Lake County 4-H Member. This year, the 2017 Youth Leadership Award is presented to Shelby Gunderson, Trail, Mn. Shelby is the daughter of Jamey and Suzan Gunderson.

Red Lake County Board on Aging members served 80 delicious BBQ lunch to the seniors that attended the annual picnic. Serving were: Sandy Bertilrud, Joanne Bradley, Shirley Dessellier, Marion Bjorgan and Sandy Greenwald.

Due to retirements last spring, Red Lake County Central Elementary School has seen a significant change in their teaching staff. This fall six individuals excitedly arrived to begin their teaching assignment at the elementary. They are Britta Glass, Natalie Hamrum, Tyrell Hamrum, Taylor Kujava, Cole Larson, and Bernie Rosten. 

The past couple of days we have had some warmer and nice sunny weather. It is welcome after all those rainy days and foggy damp days. Keep it coming Mother Nature, we have beans to combine yet. The farmers have been busy trying to finish up those beans too.

Darren Laesch, Planning Director for District 2 - MNDOT presented two options for turning over MN Hwy 222 to the county in the near future. The proposal is for transferring the jurisdiction of MN 222 from MN 92 to CSAH 5 in Oklee to Red Lake County. The proposed improvements are that MN 222 would receive a bituminous reclaim with 4-1/2” bituminous surfacing (24” wide), shoulders would be widened to 6’ with 4:1 slopes, shoulders would be paved full width within the City of Oklee and 2’ in rural areas and existing culverts would be replaced.

Cassandra (Knutson) Leseman from Duluth came home to head up a pillow case project funded by Thrivent. She works at Essential Hospital in Duluth as a rehabilitation scheduler. The Children’s Hospital there receives an average of 200 children per month and each child gets to pick out a pillow case made by volunteers. They are very low on their supply so this past Saturday this group gathered at Oklee Quilting and sewed up 74 pillow cases. Participating were: Loretta Syrtveit, Shirley Dessellier, Sue Beaudoin, Grace Dessellier, Sylvia Cole from Middle River, Jess Knutson, Margaret Delude, Kassidy Torgerson, and Cassandra Leseman, Duluth.

Red Lake County Central High School’s induction ceremony into the Minnesota Association of Honor Societies was held Friday, October 13 in the high school gym. The six students who were inducted included Andrew Fish, Calyssa Eskeli, Lilly Guillemette, Jayden Iverson, Adrianne Jones, and Sophia Linder.

The Plummer Senior Citizens met. They sang Happy Birthday to Inga, who was 103 on the 21st, Saturday. She said grace in Norwegian before they ate. Kim Wolff, from Lutheran Social Services, a great speaker, spoke about the need for volunteers to help relieve those who are caregivers for a love one and the shortage of help in nursing homes. They all enjoyed a potluck lunch.
