Year in Review....

May 9: The Annual Red Lake County 4-H Share the Fun performance were held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Lafayette High School Robert Matzke Gymnasium. The 4-H Clubs performing a skit were: The Huot Hustlers 4-H Club (4-H Volunteer Leaders, Sara Kenfield, Lee and Jaclyn Rondfor) with their skit called, “The 4-H Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and the Garnes Go Getters 4-H Club (4-H Leader, Kim Olson and Jen Srnsky) with their skit “4-H Teamwork.”

Swimming lessons will be offered through Community Education for children in the Oklee School District. There will be one session of 15 lessons offered at the Fosston School beginning June 4 and continues each weekday through June 22.

Envirothon was held on May 2 at Rydell Wildlife Refuge. There were six teams sent from Red Lake County Central High school. Teams also participate in tests in five different categories: aquatics, forestry, wildlife, soils, and current events.

Eleven members of the Red Lake County Central band attended the Instrumental Solo and Ensembles Contest at the East Grand Forks High School on Thursday, April 26.

Oh the weather and temperatures have been good these past few days. It is nice not to have to arm ourselves with heavy winter clothing.

May 16: Red Lake County Central Graduation was held on Friday, May 25th at the High School in Oklee. The ceremony began at 5:30 p.m. Twenty-five seniors received their diplomas during the graduation ceremony.

During Red Lake County Central High School Awards Day on Wednesday, May 9th, seniors were recognized along with their future plans. Local scholarships were also given out totaling $22,250. 

Senior attendees at RLCC’s “Winter Wonderland” Prom were Matthew Vettleson, David Clifton, Ethan Vettleson, Tyler Jensen, Seth Paradis, Nick Pahlen, Hannah Kolstoe, Jade Person, Sydney Melby, Jayden Fore, Erin Jones, Noah Bakken and Linsey Thompson, Sara Simon, Katie Olson, Megan Smith, Kara Longtin,  Rosie Christianson and Gunner Anderson.

RLCC Junior attendees for Prom 2018 were: Isaac Eskeli, Connor Lambert, Dawson Rystad, Alex Peterson, Phillip Sorenson, Justin Nemec, Tom Nelson, Austin Jensen, Hannah Riendeau, Lacey Pendelton, Sarah Christensen, Marie Johnson, Nick Lill, Adrien Verbout, Tasha Manning, Zoe Russillo, Julia Bernstein, Jocelyn Castaneda, Sydnie Gunderson, and Daphney Koralewski. 

Red Lake County Central recognized the April Students of the Month. Senior High Student of the Month was awarded to Allison Aakkus and Junior High Student of the Month was awarded to Danny Guillemette.

Mother’s Day has come and gone. So many mothers have been honored, so lets keep on honoring mothers throughout the year. A really great honor is to take Mom out for dinner more than just once a year just to give her a break from the drudgery of the kitchen.

May 23: Red Lake County Central May Students of the Month for Senior High and Junior High were 16 year old Lily Guillemette in tenth grade and 14 year old Peyton Fish in eighth grade.

On Wednesday, May 17th the Red Lake County Central Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADDS) went on a trip along with their advisor Ms. Beth Hagen. They went to help out at the New Life Center, a homeless shelter for men. The SADDs helped remodel the building by moving furniture and belongings out of the buildings. Ms. Hagen said, “The kids did an amazing job and their help was greatly appreciated.”

At the Senior Site this past week they had a party where everyone was invited to come and bring an “old time” apron. There were several aprons brought and everyone looked back to aprons worn by our Mothers and Grandmothers.

Many people took in their new plants on Saturday evening with the threat of frost. It did get down to 34 at our house so I see why everyone thought to take the tender babies in. It has been such an unpredictable   year.

Cliff Melby submitted a story about Door #5, a touching story about a great friend when cancer was part of his friends life and the time he spent with him at the Roger Maris Center. The story was about the care and compassion that they received once they arrived at the Roger Maris coming in Door # 5 and the very good people  and their kindness that was inside.
