Year in Review....

April 4: Eleven members of the French ITV Classes, their teacher, and four other adults visited Quebec City March 17 – 20, 2018. Breckenridge students were Olivia Eichhorn and Jennifer Puchalski. Lafayette High School students were Shayla Lallier, Marcus Paradis and Rachel Wieland. Red Lake County Central students were Allison Aakhus, Britain Arlt, Grace Gieseke, Sophia Linder, Zoe Russillo andAbigail Walton.

It is cold outside. Unusually cold for this time of year. We are at least 20 degrees colder than usual. But we are lucky that we missed the big storm that was predicted toward the end of last week. A dusting came to most areas.

The Red Lake County Speech Team hosted the Plummer Lions Speech Meet once again this year on Saturday, March 24.

April 11: Oklee Quilting Supply and Thief River Falls Quilting Guild sponsored a guest speaker and quilt trunk show event on Friday evening, March 23rd at the Oklee Hall. The guest speaker was Doug Leko who founded Antler Quilt Design in 2008, when he was still a high school student.

April 18: Red Lake County Coop held its Annual Meeting on Wednesday April 11th. The meeting was held at the Brooks Community Center. A breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs was served by the employees with the meeting following.

Oklee’s 35th Annual Youth Wrestling tournament on March 8, had 200 wrestlers participating with Carson Magnell being the youngest participant at 2 1/2 years old. Parents are Mikel and Jill (Rewertz) Magnell of Moorhead. Mikel graduated and wrestled for RLCC High School. 

The Speech Subsections were held at Red Lake County Central High School on Tuesday, April 3. The RLCC speech team overall came in third place out of seven teams and missed receiving second place by one point. Seven members of the speech will advance to Sections, and four will be alternates for Sections.

RLCC Senior High Choir performed “Cold and Fugue Season,” “I’ll Make a Man Out Of You,” and “A Whole New World” at the Disney and Classics Spring Concert.

Did you notice it didn’t snow today. It would be nice if it would warm up and melt all the remaining snow. Even though we complain about the late spring, it still is better than some other areas in Minnesota. The Twin Cities have been having a lot more snow than we have.

April 25: April 19, 2018 was Arlen Brekke’s last day unlocking the school doors, sweeping and mopping, and checking the boiler room plus his many other custodial duties at Red Lake County Central High School in Oklee. Brekke started working at Oklee High School as a custodian during the spring of 1993.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, April 13 – 15th, Director Mike Swenson and the RLCC High School presented the musical, “Something’s Afoot.” This is the first musical in 35 years performed on the stage at RLCC High School.

The Red Lake County Central High School held their 2018 Academic Banquet Monday, April 9th at the RLCC High School. The guest speaker for the Banquet was Angie (Chervestad) Lundeen. She attended Oklee High School and graduated with the class of 1998.

Lily Guillemette who is tenth grader at Red Lake County Central will be competing at the State Speech Tournament which will be held April 20th in the Cities. She won first place at the Speech Section Tournament which was held April 10th in Fosston. 

May 2: This year is Mr. Michael Swenson’s last year teaching at Red Lake County Central High School and he recently put on his last play, “Something’s Afoot.” His first involvement in theater began when he was in 4-H. Swenson commented that he was “shanghaied to be in a skit for Share the Fun when I was in eighth grade.”

Rick and Arlene Froiland celebrated their 50th anniversary on Saturday, the 21st, at the Legion in the evening. There four daughters and families came, as well as some of the wedding party. 

Lily Guillemette from Red Lake County Central placed fourth place at the State Speech Tournament in the poetry category. It was held April 21 at Apple Valley. She made it into the finals. She was fourth out of 24 competitors in poetry.

The RLCC High School SADDs group sponsored a fundraiser, Pennies for Patients.
