It is that time of year again. My wife and I traveled to Iowa for a couple of family reunions on her side. When we were preparing to go I saw a that about an hour and a half away was a tractor show…..featuring John Deere. I said lets go a day early to your family reunions….and we can stop in Marshalltown, Iowa, for the Mid Iowa Antique Power Assn. Show! She said sure so off we went on Thursday instead of Friday staying in Marshalltown.
We were at a the show fairly early on opening day! I walked all through the tractors on display paying special attention John Deeres of course. The thing about a tractor show is not just the tractors, it is the people. I would stop and look and if the owner was nearby I would stop a visit for a while. One of the most unique tractors I saw there was a WC Allis Chalmers high crop. This one was owned by Sam Adams of Bedford, Iowa. The WC had 36in rear tires and rims instead of 28in. The tractor also had a special rear end and final drive. Most of these tractors have a single front wheel, but this one has a narrow front end with 17in spoked front rims. In talking to the owner his research found only two lots of 100 of the special rear ends were ordered. This supports the theory 200 or less of these tractors were ever made! This tractor originally came from California but eventually ended up in Iowa! It is a quite interesting machine!
Summer is fleeting by but I have plans to sneak in a few more shows. Thanks to Mr. Sam Adams for the visit and congratulations on the nice machine!
