Student Senate State Conference

Six members of the Red Lake County Central Student Senate attended the State Conference April 7-9 at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Public School in Grove City. Advisor Mr. Randy Huie, Sydney Melby, Erin Jones, Jayden Fore, Jenna Pahlen, Calyssa Eskeli, and Lily Guillemette attended the conference. The group left Saturday morning from Oklee at 7:00 a.m. They arrived at ACGC at 11:00 a.m. They started off their meeting with guest speaker, Keith Hawkins. Hawkins got students involved with others right away. He mainly talked about leadership, roles leaders have, and ways students are able to help out others.
The Northwest Division met to learn the Division chant and talk about upcoming events. They met back in the Theater with the other divisions and split again for Round Tables. Each Round Table had their own topic to talk about.  After Round Tables, the students loaded back on buses to eat dinner at the Atwater Community Center. They returned back to the ACGC School where they played knockerball ball and attended a dance. At 9:00 p.m. they joined in the division tournaments. They played skiing and dodgeball, and NWD took fourth place! After returning to the hotels in Willmar at 10:30 p.m., they swam and slept.
The RLCC students returned to the ACGC School the next morning. They were met by guest speaker Jerrid Sebesta. He talked about financial advice. He informed the students about financial care and said, “It’s good to give.”
Next, the group listened to the candidates who were running for state positons: president, vice president, and secretary. The entire group then worked on their State Service Project: Food For Kidz. All the divisions packed a total of 45,000 meals for kids worldwide. RLCC Student Senate took one box home for the Backpack Program in Plummer. Their final guest speaker was Scott Kulstad from Fairview Hospital who talked about the opioid problem in the U.S. This helped bring debate between students and sharing of ideas and thoughts about the opioid problem.
All students attended the final Big Idea session of the conference. They picked a topic they wanted to be better informed on and learned from it. Students returned back to their hotels in Willmar to get ready for the State Conference Banquet. They voted for president, vice president, and secretary. They also had a great meal and joined in another dance. At 10:00 p.m. they returned to the hotel where they ordered Dominos and slept.
The next and final morning, they returned to the ACGC School to reveal the winnering officer and meet the new state board. They also watched a highlight video of the conference and a video of next year’s state hosts. They left for home at 11:00 a.m.
