Student Senate Members Attend Summit

The annual Fall Summit for the Northwest Division Student Senates was held on Wednesday, November 15 at the Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. The event was attended by hundreds of students from area schools including sixteen Red Lake County Central Student Senate members and their advisor, Mr. Randy Huie.
The day started off with a breakfast and then a general assembly introducing the Northwest Division representatives and advisor, giving information about and pushing councils to attend this year’s State Summit, and explaining the layout and plan for the day.
“Carnival” was the theme for this year’s summit. Students from each senate were put into separate groups and were sent to three different “icebreakers” with the intention to get students loosened up and ready to talk. After icebreakers, everyone met back up again to watch and listen to mentalist Brian Imbus. Imbus amazed the senates, saying he could read energies and proving it by predicting the future and correctly guessing random student’s favorite things and first thoughts. When he finished the students were dismissed to a lunch with door prizes and carnival games to play.
After lunch and another brief assembly, students were sent to “Hot Topics” where each representative had individual topics to speak on and discuss. Topics included school security, pros and cons of social media and the internet, and technology in schools. A final assembly briefly summed up the day, further advised the senates to attend the State Summit, and encouraged members to run for representation in next year’s upcoming spring summit.
