Clearwater County Fair goers can visit a display of rosemaling when they attend the fair August 5 to 9 in Bagley.
This years feature will be work from Shirley Evenstad of Minneapolis and her class that she taught recently at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook.
Shirley demonstrated the Os style of rosemaling. That style of rosemaling uses bright, happy-looking colors. This class concentrated on Os—color, flowers, and scrolls, lettering, background techniques, and more. Os is a municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. It is located in the region, just south of Norway’s second-largest city, Bergen.
Evenstad was brought to Clearbrook by a grant that was submitted by Ardella Lindberg of Leonard who is a member of the Norda Gonvick Rosemalers. The grant is through the Region 2 Arts Council.
Shirley graduated from Gonvick High School in 1957 and from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. in business education. She has been a teacher and has been a rosemaler in several different styles. One of the most notable of painting is the project that they did at the Norwegian Pavilion at Epcot Center in Orlando, FL in March of 1988.
She lives in Richfield and teaches classes, paints and travels to put on workshops in several states.
