RLCC Triple “A” Nominees

Matthew Vettleson and Hannah Kolstoe from Red Lake County Central High School are seniors selected to represent RLCC in the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award Program. Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple “A” Award) is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who have a “B” or better grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities. Students must also comply with MSHSL Student Code of Conduct.
Vettleson and Kolstoe were invited to the 2018 8A Triple “A” Banquet held February 7 in Mahnomen where Sub-Section and Region 8A winners were announced. At the banquet Vettleson was named Sub-Section 31 winner for boys.
Matt Vettleson has taken nine or more online college classes and College in the High School classes. He has taken these college classes since his sophomore year and continued through his senior year. He is a part of the Minnesota Honor Society and has had many opportunities to serve the community.
Vettleson also has a huge role in the school’s band, participating from his ninth grade year all the way through his senior year. He competed in the Ensemble Contest as well. He has taken advantage of his fine art opportunities by playing taps for local Memorial and Veteran’s Day programs and playing for his church services.
He is very involved with sports, competing in football, basketball, and baseball. Vettleson played football since ninth grade, was named to the all-district team both his junior and senior years, and served as one of the four captains his senior year. He has played basketball and baseball since his sophomore year. Through the opportunities with sports, Vettleson has been “taught many life lessons about being a leader” which has helped him in life.
Through athletics, Vettleson feels he was “taught responsibility because your teammates are dependent on you to get the task done.” He added that others also depend on you to perform to the best of your ability in the arts. Vettleson commented, “With academics, you learn responsibility by being presented with deadlines.”
Vettleson plans to attend North Dakota State University to study Animal Science and Agribusiness.
Hannah Kolstoe has taken nine or more online college courses and College in the High School courses. As well as being a member in the Minnesota Honor Society, Kolstoe has consistently been on the honor roll.
In the arts area, she plays the clarinet and has participated in solo and ensemble contests. Kolstoe has been involved in the three act play. Regarding the arts Kolstoe said, “I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and push myself. Performing in these arts has made me more of an open person and am more willing to speak or perform publicly.”
Kolstoe has participated in volleyball and basketball throughout her high school career, was captain senior year for both sports and academic all-state for volleyball in 2017. Regarding athletics in her life Kolstoe commented, “I pushed myself and practiced as hard as I could. I learned that things wouldn’t be handed to me and I have to work hard to get things I want.”
In the future Kolstoe plans on attending the University of North Dakota for accounting. About her involvement in arts, athletics, and academics Kolstoe said, “Everything I have achieved came from years of working toward these goals and not giving up if I become frustrated or it seems impossible. My participation in band and the play made it easier to stand in front of a crowd of people and speak or perform in any sense.”
