RLCC’S Julia Bernstein places third at DownUnder

Red Lake County Central student Julia Bernstein was invited to compete at “DownUnder” on July 2nd- July 10th. It took place at the Surfers Paradise in Brisbane, Australia. She decided to go so she could run in a track meet with other competitors plus go to Australia. She competed in three events: the 200m, 4x400 relay, and 4x100 relay. She competed against approximately 300 people. She and her relay teammates from other states placed third in the 4x4 relay.
Bernstein said the most interesting and exciting things on her trip was to meet new friends and to place in the 4x4. Other things she did on her trip was to go sightseeing and go to a zoo where she got to pet a kangaroo.
Other people who attended the trip were Julia’s mom Krista and her cousin. Julia commented on her trip that she was not a fan of flying but she did get used to it. Her favorite part of the trip was holding a koala bear.
DownUnder was founded in 1989 by George O’Scanlon of New Zealand. Athletes from around the world are selected to compete in a sport they excel in. The mission for DownUnder is to promote the growth, development, and self-esteem of the individual athlete through sport.
Julia Bernstein is currently a junior at RLCC. Julia is the daughter of Mitch and Krista Bernstein. She has been s a member of the Red Lake County Rebels track team since seventh grade. The Rebels are coached by Randy Huie and Cheryl Matzke.
