Rebels Boys’ Basketball Banquet

The Red Lake County Rebels Boys’ Basketball Awards Banquet was held Monday, April 2nd in Plummer. The banquet was at 6:30 p.m. and the coaches talked about the season following the meal.
First Coach Kory Baril talked about the ninth grade team. He mentioned their 13-5 record and how they improved as athletes. Next Coach Randy Huie spoke about the Junior Varsity team. He talked about the slow start and how they turned things around to end the season on a 12-10 record, and 5-1 in the conference. Finally Head Coach Steve Philion talked about the Varsity team. He was very happy with the team’s improvement and was very thankful for the boys’ hard work and respect. The Varsity finished with a record of 10-18.
After the coaches spoke, awards were handed out. The letter winners for the Rebels were Matt Vettleson, Ethan Vettleson, Jordan Johnson, John Renner, Austin Jensen, Adrien Verbout, Dawson Rystad, Alex Peterson, Connor Lambert, Brandon Wiskow, Ben Cardinal, Derek Peterson, Zach Benson, Hayden Cardinal, and Isiah Olson. Perfect Attendance award recipients were Matt Vettleson, Alex Peterson, Brandon Wiskow, Hayden Cardinal, Derek Peterson, Jake Duden, Bailey Hince, Carter Williams, and Eric Gieseke.
The only All-Conference player on the team was Ethan Vettleson. Derek Peterson was Honorable Mention for All-Conference and was also on the Northland All-Tournament Team. Isiah Olson earned a new team record with 18 rebounds in a game.
For the special team awards, Matt Vettleson received the Best Teammate and Defensive Player of the Year awards. The Most Improved Player was Brandon Wiskow and the Most Dedicated/Hardest Worker was John Renner. The Captains for the Rebels were seniors Jordan Johnson, John Renner, Matt Vettleson, and Ethan Vettleson.
