Postal worker sentenced for stealing money, gift cards

Timothy Merle Conger, 25, of Bagley was sentenced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in Polk County District Court for mail theft. He had been stealing money from the mail by opening and resealing the letters with tape after the cash inside had been removed. The theft carries a maximum punishment of three years in prison. He was also given 24 months in prison, but that was suspended as long as he follows the conditions of his probation for four years.

Investigators tracked one of the gift cards that was for a graduate after he had used it at Target. He had worked at the Gully Post Office for three years and when he transferred to the Gonvick Post Office he said the stealing stopped. He became the PTF, Part Time Flexible Clerk for a short time in July of 2017. Conger told investigators that he stole during in duties for the USPS between December 2016 through June of 2017. It was estimated that he took between $1,500 and $2,000 in cash and 80 to 100 gift cards. 

He started working for the Postal Service in October of 2015 in various places including Bemidji, Gully and Gonvick where help as needed.
