Math Night focus: Helping kids see more on their own

Math Night focus this year was how we can help our kids grow in thinking, not just in math facts.
The most important question we can ask our kids, on a daily basis, is "What do you notice?". Not just when doing a math problem, but also when you see a picture, while you are driving, playing a game, or playing with toys.
Our kids notice a lot, by asking them and talking about it, we help our children grow mathematically.
When you are tempted to just answer a question, you can instead ask "What do you notice?" or "What do you think?". When playing a game or helping with homework and your child gives you an answer quickly, you can ask, "How did you get that?", "What else could do?", or  "Why?". But don't over do it, about half the time would be more than fine and you don't want to ruin the fun.
We had 7 posters around the room encouraging kids to notice. We got many great observations. Thanks to all of the families for participating! It was a great night!
Each week for the next 7 weeks, the McIntosh Times will feature a "What did you notice?" poster to encourage you to see what your kids are noticing.
