Market Day is this Saturday

The City of Oklee will be making a presentation to Omar Sundrud's sons, about the dedication of the North Park to be renamed "Omar Sundrud Memorial Park" at 7:30 p.m. in the Oklee Hall.

Oklee Market Day will be held on Saturday, August 13th. There will be lots of activities for all ages to participate in, along with food vendors and flea markets.

The day starts off at 8:00 a.m. on August 13 with a Key Hunt. Try your luck for prizes! Keys will be hidden around town for people to find. Also starting at 8:00 a.m. will be Paul’s 5K Walk/Run registration at the corner of Main Street and 2nd Avenue. Note: the location changed.  $12 individual registration. $30 family registration. Forms can also be emailed or sent in the mail if requested. 9:00 a.m. the Walk/Run will start. 

At 9:00 a.m. Vendors will open for your shopping pleasure. So far the following will be set up for the flea market held at the Oklee Community Hall; Stacey’s Custom Design, Norwex, Juice Plus, Avon, Clever Container, Tupperware, Oh, Scrap!, Princess House Charmsations Thirty-One Gifts, Paparazzi $5 Jewelry, Oh Fer Cute Creations, Fit Team, Scentsy, Crocheted items by Clarice Kolling, St. Francis Church- Bake Sale, Lemon Grass, Lipsence, UsBooks and More, and Keep Collective. A Quilt Show will be held at the Red Lake County Central High School gymnasium. There are three categories: Twin & Larger quilts; Smaller quilts and other projects; and Heritge quilts and other projects. Debra Quinn will be here to give a trunk show at 2:00 p.m. Also there will be demos and Take & Make projects throughout the day. The Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest on Main Street will start at 10:00 a.m. Participants need to bring their own chalk. A limited supply is available if needed. Prizes will be given out to the first, second and third place winners in the 5-8 age group, 9-12 age group and adult class. Pre-registration is preferred. The judging will take place at 1:00 p.m. with winners announced at 3:00 p.m. Also starting at 10:00 a.m. is the Old Time Plowing Demo at the South end of Oklee. The Car Show and Motorcycle Show is at 10:00 a.m. All cars and motorcycles will be lined up on Main Street. Registration can be done that day. 11:30 a.m. is the Back Seat Driver Contest located on 2nd avenue. Grab a partner and see how well you can give directions to the driver of the lawnmower.

Baja Race at the South Park will start at 12:30 p.m. $10 admission. $15 per driver and per pit member. Registration will be at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Drivers need to be at least 15 years of age. If under 18 a parent signature will be needed. Cash prizes and trophies will be given out to the winners of each class. The five classes include; 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, 8 cylinder, truck (includes van and jeep) and powderpuff. Contract Bernie DeHate at 218-686-3619. Starting at 1:30 p.m. is the Tractor Parade. Contact Mike Peterson for questions at 218-66-9558. At 2:30 p.m. there will be street games. Winners from car show, sidewalk chalk art contest, business drawings and key hunt winners will be announced.

A Chili Cook-off/TJ’s Tavern and Baked Potato Bar will take place at the Oklee Community Hall. Think you have what it takes to make the best chili? Try out your best recipe and compete for some bragging rights! Each person or team will prepare 4 quarts of chili and bring it to the Hall by 4:30 p.m. to serve to anyone who is interested in participating in the “contest.” Each person/team is also asked to bring a ballot box to place beside their chili and the public will vote on which one has the best chili by donating a minimum of $1.00 to that person/team. The person/team with the most money will be declared the winner and the money donated will be given to the Oklee Market Day. Participants are encouraged to have fun with the competition by selecting a team name and a creative chili name and decorating your space. A list of ingredients should be posted beside the chili and a copy of the recipe should be displayed with the chili. Cups and spoons will be provided. A ceremony will be held sometime during the day, to announce the renaming of Oklee's North Park to the "Omar Sundrud Memorial Park." Most likely before the concert, but no time has been officially set.

To end Oklee Market Day Craig Bickhardt and Oklee’s own Jack Sundrud will be back with “Idlewheel” at 7:00 p.m. at TJ’s Tavern. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased that night or bought ahead of time at the Oklee Herald, Oklee Quilting Supply, Inc. and Oklee Lumber, Inc. “Shell Shock” will also be at TJ’s Tavern at 9:00 p.m.

Food vendors are the American Legion and Zion Lutheran Church. Food will also be available at TJ’s Tavern, Oklee Café and Cenex.
