Lion’s Club holds annual picnic in the park

The Grygla Lion’s Club met at the picnic shelter for their annual steak supper and meeting in the park. They met at 6pm and enjoyed delicious steaks before getting down to business. Meeting topics included the Grygla Open, local club donations, and the Blood Drive, which will be held on August 12th from 11am-5pm at the Grygla Community Center. This will mark the 34th year the Lion’s have coordinated a blood drive, holding 3 a year! Be on the look out for further information about scheduling your appointment. 

The Grygla Lion’s Club plays an active role in the Grygla Fall Festival, which they discussed at the meeting. Members help coordinate the kid’s activities and games, the kid/adult tractor pulls, ticket/button sales at the gates, the fly-in breakfast and the Demolition Derby.

The club also discussed the conversion of the city tennis courts into sand volleyball courts, as the tennis courts are not being used. The intended finish date would be in time for the Grygla Centennial, which will be in August of 2017. 

President of the Lion’s Club is Jim Hest, who is starting his second year as president. Some of Jim’s duties as president include: organizing and coordinating monthly meetings, working with different committees, which include Gambling, Membership and the Community Center Committees, among other things.

The Grygla Lions put in over 6,000 man-hours per year and most are silent and subtle voluntary efforts. The Lions do numerous things for the city of Grygla, including the annual Smelt Fry, Senior Night, Adopt-A-Highway and the eyeglasses bank.
