A Hillbilly Weddin’ presented by RLCC High School

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday this past weekend, a very fun play called “A Hillbilly Weddin’” was presented to the public. The RLCC Theater’s production is by Le Roma Greth and is by special arrangement with Heuer Publishing.
The play takes place in the living room of the Belsnickle cabin deep in the Ozark Hills,.in present day, however in Horsehair Junction, Arkansas it seems to be the 1870’s. The family survives on the hogs it raises and lives from the land, from the animals hunted and other foods gathered from the woods. This family would give you the shirt from their backs if you needed the help, they are a proud people, but never have caught up to the 20th century.
These people live by simple rules, when one is a ripe old age of 14, a gal has to get hitched. By sixteen, she is over the hill. And the story begins with Ma suggesting to Pa that he should be finding husbands for the two older girls, because Juney Lou, his third daughter, wants to marry Chiz Upchlager, and it wouldn’t look right if the third youngest got married before Ceelie, a ripe old nineteen, and Bonnie Mae, the bookworm.
Pa takes his shotgun off the wall with a very simple method of procuring the necessary husbands. He decides to “wing” ‘em, pick out the buckshot, and have the boys married to his girls before they know what happened.
Ronald Maxwell, a medical student, and his aunt Lucy Maxwesll arrive at the Belsnickle’s mountain cabin because their car broke down. Both Ceelie and Bonnie Mae are instantly attracted to the handsome stranger. Bonnie Mae keeps her adoration secret, however, Ceelie utterly refuses to marry anyone else.
Ceelie is the dirtiest, homeliest hillbilly girl in the valley and loves here animals and snakes more than people. Ceelie is made to clean up (take the first bath she has ever had), fix her hair while Pa gets his trusted gun, but unfortunately misses Ronald.
Meanwhile, two neighbors (Chiz and Obeey Upchlager) decide to fake a feud to scare Ronald away as he is a threat to them because Ceelie is wanting Ronald as her husband. Ma forbids Pa to take another shot at Ronald so he, ignorant of the other plan, also decides to fake a feud and shoot a husband for Ceelie. The feudin’ finally settles long enough for Ceelie, Bonnie Mae and Junie Lou to find happiness.
