Grygla native, Sheldon Teigland, receives honorable award presented by Alaska Power Association

Sheldon Teigland, originally from Grygla, and a 1963 Goodridge High School graduate, has been living in Barrow, Alaska since 1974. He recently retired as the Administrative Manager from Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative, with a retirement party held in his honor, in Alaska, on July 31st, 2015. Attendees included Sheldon’s sister, Gloria Ness, and her husband, Richard, of Viking, MN, and also good friends, Dale & Kay Wilkens, of Grygla. 

Teigland was recently presented with an honorable award titled The APA Hatcher-Williams-Turkington Employee Award. The Barrow Utilities and Electric Coop employees who win this award are usually long-term staff who have made significant contributions to their electric utility. In Sheldon’s case, descriptions of his contributions, submitted by Ben Frants, who is the President of Alaska Power Association’s Board of Directors, swayed the members of the awards committee to vote Sheldon as the employee award winner. Member utilities submit names of deserving staff, and after quite a lot of conversation to choose an award winner, because the slate of candidates is always so great, the committee decided to award Teigland this honor. The Hatcher-Williams-Turkington Employee Award was created in 2001 at the recommendation of Alaska Power Association member utilities. As stated, the award recognizes employees for exemplary service to their utilities, the industry and the local community. The award is named after three former APA board members.
