Grygla named KVRR’s ‘Town of the Week’

The town of Grygla made a name for itself when it was named KVRR’s ‘Town of the Week’ on Tuesday, January 10th. Grygla went head-to-head in a voting contest against Sheyenne, North Dakota, but won 87% (463 votes) to 13% (72 votes). Rob Kupec, KVRR Chief Meteorologist, based out of Fargo/Moorhead, started the ‘Town of the Week’ back in the fall of 2013. When it first started, folks could simply nominate a town of their choice and wait for it to be featured on the news. It’s changed a bit, to now having two towns, similar in size and population, go head-to-head and battle it out through online voting.

Once the two towns are announced by KVRR News, the public has 24 hours to vote online for the town of their choice. The contest is all based on nominations; Grygla received three nominations from Travis Smith, Dustin Nelson and Carol Steuck; winning the Hardees prize package was Steuck. 

Kupec says northern Minnesota does extremely well at this. “I have more nominations from up in that area vs. anywhere else,” he laughs.

The city of Grygla is now in the running for ‘Town of the Year,’ which is announced every June. Every featured town gets put on a bracket strictly by the number of votes it receives. Instead of having only 24 hours, voters will have a full week.
