It’s been a great weekend in wrestling for Goodridge wrestlers! On Friday, the TRF Prowler varsity wrestling team, which includes Kehan Nelson, an 8th grader, and Jolson Sargent a 10th grader, both from Goodridge, traveled to Perham for the final two rounds of the section 8AA championship tournament. Their hopes were high but they had to face the Perham Yellow Jackets first. TRF had not won a dual against Perham in 9 years.
Friday night that streak was broken! The Prowlers defeated the Yellow Jackets with a 38-32 victory. The victory was led by huge pins in the 120 lbs, Kehan Nelson, 132 lbs, Cody Wienen and 160 lbs, Aaron Bruggeman, bouts. The Prowlers knew they had won the dual after Mason Iverson’s decision win at the 195 lbs bout. With only two bouts remaining, Perham would not be able to make up the point deficit.
To finish out the tournament TRF had to take on the #1 seed in section 8AA the Detroit Lakes, Lakers, for a trip to the state tournament. The Prowlers would come up short with a 30-38 defeat. The 2019-2020 varsity team is a young team that includes 5 eighth graders with 4 of them in the starting positions. They finished the season with a 20-8 record and brought home a section 8AA runner up championship trophy, the first in 11 years. Congratulations on a season well battled.
