Envirothon Team from RLCC Advances to State

For the second year in a row, an Envirothon team from Red Lake County Central High School will advance to the State Envirothon to be held Monday, May 15 at Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch near Stewartville. The team of Taylor Bushelle, Sydney Melby, Hannah Kolstoe, Jayden Fore, and Nick Pahlen came in third place at the 2017 Regional Envirothon held at Rydell National Wildlife Refuge near Mentor allowing them to advance to State. For their oral presentation on a current issue they performed a skit.
There were five teams from RLCC who competed at Rydell’s on May 3rd. Seniors who competed were Angel Auman, Megan Berberich, Taylor Bushelle, Ashley Longtin, Tera Qualley, Nikki Schmitz, Kelsie Sirjord, and Deidra Walton. Juniors were Jayden Fore, Hannah Kolstoe, Kara Longtin, Sydney Melby, Katie Olson, Nick Pahlen, Seth Paradis, Ethan Vettleson, and Matt Vettleson. Sophomores were Julia Bernstein, Andrew Fish, Sydnie Gunderson, Marie Johnson, and Connor Lambert. The freshman were Zach Benson, Calyssa Eskeli, Sophia Linder, Chris Longtin, Sidney Olson, Jenna Pahlen, Derek Peterson, and Tanisha Srnsky. Science teacher Mr. Steven Strutz accompanied the group.
At Environthon the students go through six different stations. The five categories at the stations are Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and Current Issues. At each station the students had to take an exam that consisted of 20 questions each. The students also have to present an oral presentation on a current issue topic in the sixth station. Teams had to work together to communicate a solution for the problem of a farmer polluting a stream causing trout to die.
