Clearwater County Historical Society Awarded a $25,000 Legacy Grant to Support Construction Documents for Gran Church
3/20/26 The Clearwater County Historical Society (CCHS) is pleased to announce that it has received a $25,000.00 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant.
This funding will be used to contract with an Historic Structures Expert to complete design work for the recommended treatments suggested in a 2024/25 condition assessment of the Gran Evangelical Church. The Society maintains Gran Church and Cemetery in Popple Township, which is currently listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
These design documents will allow the CCHS to phase the work that is needed to save the building from further deterioration and manage the continued care of this historic property into the future with the goal of preserving it for future generations.
Executive Director Tamara Edevold noted that Gran Church is a “small log building with a big impact. Its is one of just a few places on our county that is listed on the National Register of History Places and it is the oldest public building still standing in Clearwater County, it deserves to be preserved with the upmost care and consideration.”
Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are administered by the Minnesota Historical Society based on the recommendations of its Historic Resources Advisory Committee, a volunteer citizen panel made up of representatives of local, county and statewide historical and cultural organizations across the state.
The grants program is made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008. The Legacy Amendment supports efforts to preserve Minnesota land, water and legacy, including Minnesota history and cultural heritage.
The Clearwater County Historical Society was established in 1968 and operates a museum and history program in the old Shevlin school in Shevlin. The mission of the Clearwater County Historical Society is to discover and disseminate the heritage of Clearwater County. Beyond that, one of the Societies primary goals is to encourage local pride, to help people appreciate Clearwater County and its unique heritage.
