Annual River Watch Forum Update

The River Watch group at Red Lake Country Central High School has been studying two local rivers in Brooks, Oklee, and Plummer. The rivers include Lost River and Clearwater River. The group measures and checks how clear the water is, how low the water is and makes sure that the rivers are all cleaned up. 

Their group also has gone on a kayak trip down the Clearwater River to see the nature and river life. The River Watchers checked the muscle bed and measured the muscles. The group hopes to plan another trip during the summer. 

Each year the River Watch Forum is held. RLCC’s River Watch team went to the Forum at University of Minnesota Crookston college on Tuesday, March 15. The group made a poster to show what they learned throughout the past year of River Watch. The goal is to show the community what River Watch is and how they can help with the rivers. 

Brandi Jensen, Nicholas Plante and Erin Jones showed their poster to the judges and talked about how their River Watch group wants people to look out at the river in different ways, to think of it and take care of it and make it nicer, and to get people more involved. They listened to guest speaker that talked about how to get the community involved in the watershed group. These students took classes like life of a bug, drones, and what’s under the water. The classes showed many new and interesting things that the students haven’t learned before. 

The RLCC River Watch advisor is Ms. Shelley Steva and the students are Brandi Jensen, Shawnee Styles, Katheryne DeHate, Marcus Styles, Nicholas Plante, Lynsey Morris, Shelby Gunderson, Billie Jo Gryskiewicz, and Erin Jones.
