23rd annual Pumpkin Day held in Gonvick

The 23rd annual Pumpkin Day was held in Gonvick last weekend. Two pumpkin growers had their pumpkins come in over 1000 pounds. Bob Edevold with a 1,119 beauty and JJ Solberg with 1,008 pound. JJ had never had a 1,000 pound pumpkin before and he showed his enthusiasm. Other winners included third place Tucker Johnson 877 pounds; fourth place Tanner Pettersen 484 pounds; fifth place John Johnson 444 pounds; sixth place Erv Wickham 426 pounds; seventh place Alan Danielson 421 pounds; eighth place Charlie Bergh 393 pounds; ninth place Dylan Owens 349 pounds and tenth place Harper and McKinley Watne at 230 pounds. 

Cash prizes were given to the ten winners. First place received $1,000, Second place $500, third place $250, fourth place $150 and $100 each for the sixth through tenth place. To enter for the pumpkin weigh off is to become a member of the Gonvick Pumpkin Growers for $5.00 for the year.

The younger group of pumpkin growers had a very good year. Taking first were Trever and Gavin Solberg with a 583 pound pumpkin, followed by Hailey Martine 377 pounds, Morgan and Olivia Basinger with Corbyn Guy at 364 pounds, Jake Wickham 298 pounds, Conner Patten 286 pounds, Tia Wickham and Bo Erickson tied with 284 pounds and Emma Owens at 272 pounds.

It did not look like very good weather for the Gonvick Pumpkin Day but sixty cars were registered for the car show with $100 given to each of the top five winners. 

Winning the participant voting at the end of the show were: Rick Myrum from Pengilly with a 1935 Chevy Pickup, Tom Morris from Crookston with a 1937 Ford; Jerry Lowe Jr. from Grand Forks with a 1966 GTO; Larry Anderson from Gully with a 1955 Buick and Mike Dille from Sartell with a 1956 Chevy. 

Bryan Engen, took the Peoples Choice Trophy at the 23rd annual Pumpkin day activities in Gonvick. The car is owned by Dick and Bonnie Engen.

The Gonvick Fire Department had a hamburger and hot dog stand and were also selling raffle tickets. They appreciated the many who stopped by their stand. The first prize of a 9x9 Amish made mini barn was won by Pete Peterson, the second place prize of a 10-22 Ruger take down gun was won by Dennis Gordon; the third place prize of an Amish made 3 foot Oak Deacon’s Bench was won by Debbie Edevold; the fourth place prize of $200 was won by Ken Olson and the fifth place prize of a Garden Arch was won by Katy Stenvik. 

A chalk drawing contest was held on the cement slab where Vandy’s Grocery once stood. 32 children entered the event. First place winners received $20.00, second place $10.00 and third place $5.00.

Winning in the 5 to 8 age group were: First place Ambjør Snyder, second Preston Seyller and a tie for third place were Elizabeth and Kennedi Kalinowski.

Winning in the 9 to 12 age group were: First place Tallon Vorderbruggen, second place Gabby Anderson and third place Emma Crist.

Winning in the 13 to 17 age group were: First place Rachel Forsberg, second place Kiara Gordon and third place Naomi Sharp.
